We always have a weekend in Zermatt in August and usually stay at the Riffelalp. This time we decided to try something new ... not something we will do again! My husband called on our way to inform the hotel at what time we would arrive for pick-up. When we got to Zermatt station there was no-one there. He called again and was told that the driver was on his way. So we waited ... and waited... until our three-year-old simply couldn't wait anymore and off we went lugging our luggage through Zermatt. Half-way to the hotel the called to ask us where we were! Arriving at the hotel is very impressive and, as others have mentioned, you get to the reception through a very James Bond-esque entrance. At the reception, the very nice lady, Lise, who apologised for the lack of shuttle. We were offered a glass of wine at check in and we thought that it was just an oversight - mistakes happen. The next morning we were woken by someone yelling into a microphone - there was a marathon on in the village that we were unaware of and they served as a 6am alarm clock. Sadly, even though I'm unsure that it would have made a huge difference as the hotel is not well insulated, the cleaning lady had left our window slightly ajar the night before and the man yelling may as well have been in our room:-( Our suite was very nice with everything we needed but the bed was quite uncomfortable. They provided a very sweet futon for my daughter which was appreciated. The breakfast buffet was small but the quality of the food very good. Our eggs were over-cooked on the first day so we didn't bother on the second day. They did have a very good champagne for those who wanted which was a nice touch. I can't comment on the spa as we didn't use it but the pool was pleasant. Room service was good but not the wine choice. We requested the restaurant menu for a wider choice. Unfortunately, half bottles are not available and by the glass is limited and expensive. On the second day we went for a long walk and afterwards called to ask if the shuttle could pick us up - no, again. On leaving we triple checked and called to make sure that they could bring us to the station to catch our train!! Architecturally speaking, the hotel is attractive but not quite a 5 star yet. We will be returning to our trusty Riffelalp next time!
