My wife and I arrived in Lausanne mid-afternoon on a very hot day after a long train ride and decided to splurge a bit and get a snack and drinks on the Beau Rivage patio.
The hotel and its setting are incredible but that turned out to be a thin veneer.
We sat on the patio accompanied by a number of dead flies on the sofa. I know the hotel can't control insect life, but you would think that when an ordinary 12 ounce beer (Konigsberg) cost 16 swiss francs and a small cheese plate is 22, the staff could sweep the flies off the seat befroe you sit down.
But that wasn't the worst of it. Along with the cheese plate came a small salad. The lettuce was not just wilted but basically rotting. When we asked to speak to the chef about it we got a floor manager who said 'I am the chef for down here', which clearly he wasn't. He offered no apologies, kind of begrudingly said he would bring us another salad.
We spent three weeks in Switzerland and never encountered anything but good service and pleasant attitudes. The haughtiness of this 'floor manager' and the fact that a hotel of this stature would even allow rotting lettuce to be presented to a customer was astounding to me.
A really 'rotten' experience on an otherwise nice vacation in Switzerland.
