“This is a tough one....”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

I really struggled with my review of this hotel. Some things were great but some...really not great at all.

I think this could be a good choice if you like no-frills travel. I, unfortunately, really like frills. A lot.

I was here for five nights for business. Our meeting was held at the hotel. I love Ouchy so was looking forward to my stay. The front desk staff was excellent. Really, the staff overall is a highlight of this place. Every one was helpful and friendly. Check in was quick. And then, I went to my room.

Tiny. Tiny, tiny room. The bed took up the entire space (and it was a double, not a queen so that should give you a sense of the space). There was a built in desk but no floor space at all. I travel with a hard-sided bag and there was no place to put it when open--except the bed.

I did have a gorgeous view of the lake, which was nice. And the room was spotless. Really incredibly clean. The bathroom was small too--no counter space. And most note worthly--no toiletries. There is a dispenser on the wall that is body wash, shampoo and conditioner all in one. No thanks. Fortunately, I packed my own things but if you are traveling light, you may end up walking to Migros or Coop for toiletries. This is the kind of thing that makes no sense to me. Especially in a hotel that is hosting a business meeting. Business travelers expect toiletries--just ask my colleagues who were a tad distressed about the lack of them.

The room had radiator heat. And there was no way to control it. It got so hot that I slept with the window open (and this was in January). Unfortunately, the open window meant street noise so not great for sleeping. And speaking of sleeping, the duvet was a very odd size. It was so short that it didn't cover my feet...and I'm only 5'5".

Breakfast was good. The meeting room we were in was great--it even had a terrace off of it which was nice for breaks.

Bottom line. Would I stay here again? Not if I had a choice of other hotels. Could I stay here again. Sure, if I had to. I'm spoiled by the size of American hotel rooms and for a long stay, I really need more space.

Room Tip: Get a view of the lake. Gorgeous!

This is a perfect location to stay, especially in summer. Take the tram from the central station. Just a few stops, very handy. Room prices are reasonable and good value for money. Service is very good, as almost always in Switzerland. It may even get excellent if you speak some French. Free WiFi works fine, breakfast is tasty, rooms are ok. The hotel advertises itself as a 3-star hotel, which it surely is.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the lake and with own spacious balcony.

- The breakfast bread is truly to die for - and you can trust my French palate about that one
- Great location, next to the subway station
- Fantastic view on the lake from my window

The decoration of the hotel is a little dated and toiletries are limited to an all in one soap dispenser. For the rest, the hotel is more than fine. I had a room on the top floorbon the back of the building. It was very quiet. Together wih a good bed, I slept very well. Continental breakfast buffet is more than sufficient.
For this area, close to the lake and IOC museum, a hotel with a very good value.

This three star hotel benefits from being located on the lakeside and very close to the Lausanne métro. My room had a fabulous view on the lake and was quiet at night. The room complete with balcony was impeccably clean and provided an outrageously priced minibar. Breakfast included in the price of the room was served in the restaurant downstairs. It comprised a very tired looking buffet together with some grumpy and bored waiters who periodically replenished it. Reception staff seemed efficient enough but not overly helpful and callers had difficulty getting a reply from the switchboard.

Room Tip: Ask for room with view on the lake.

Aulac is very well situated, in Ouchy, facing the lake, next to subway station (for which you get free passes from hotel). Travelers should take a lake view room. The service is very good and rooms are ultra clean, Swiss standards!
Also, according to Swiss standards, the rate is very high (better offers on their internet site) and, if decoration has probably not changed for some time, furniture and paints are new.
Ouchy Restaurants are also very close.
I recommend this hotel and Ouchy as alternative to Lausanne, especially in summer when one can enjoy the lake.
Downturn is that the hotel has no spa, no pool, and no fitness.

Room Tip: Choose a lake view room, high enough because of the noise from the road.

Although I prefer the Hotel Royal Savoy which is currently under renovation, this hotel is a good value. Try to get room #511 as you will have your own balcony over looking Lac Leman and the French Alps. This hotel is actually in Ouchy, down by the water, which is nice but at night it's a bit loud. The playground is below and children play there past 11:00pm (23:00h) Very annoying. Plus, if you're not the one in #411, if you're in #409, the balcony is directly to the right of your window which is not good if you're trying to sleep and your neighbors are not. Also, this hotel doesn't have airconditioning...always a nice breeze but closing the window to get peace and quiet is not an option. WiFi was slow but bareable. It's easy to get to, just take any tram to Ouchy, turn left, walk around the corne and there it is. Breakfast was pretty good. When I return, I will definately choose Hotel Royal Savoy over Hotel Aulac.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room overlooking the lake
