Hotel du Marche is in an excellent location, you can walk to the city center In just a few minutes. Metro station in Riponne is also close by. The hotel is on a peaceful side street and very clean. There are rooms with or without own bathroom, I had one without a bathroom (there is a small bathroom and shower on the corridor). These are very small but clean. There is a wash basin in the room and also a fridge, a water boiler with teas etc. and TV with all the cable channels. My room was very comfortable. The staff at the hotel is very nice! If you are looking for a cheap (by Swiss standards of course!) hotel in Lausanne, Hotel du Marche is a good choice.

Have to say, our two-night stay at the Hotel du Marche in July was almost laughable, it was so bad. We emailed them; they emailed back that we needed to send our cc number to secure. We did. Then they never responded. We had to email and call three additional times to make sure we were good. (Should I mention that that cc number was stolen that day and started making it's way across Europe?) We get there. The front desk attendant was lovely. They send us up to our room, which is completely in disarray, with two plumbers tearing up the shower and sink. Oops. They forgot. Just leave your stuff. We'll be done later (I guess we won't stay and relax.) The first morning, our neighbor's alarm starting going off at 5:30. Luckily, they kept pressing snooze for about an hour, so every 7 minutes for an hour we got to hear their alarm through the very thin walls. The next morning, a different neighbor got home around 6:30 (a.m.) and decided to finish out the party with a rock concert. The front desk was no help.
Perhaps this was just the trifecta of bad luck, but sometimes luck is made. I'd spring for a few extra dollars and stay away. We travel about a month every year, and saying this was my worst hotel stay ever is saying something.

The hotel was in a good location to visit the old city but a good cab or bus trip from the train station. The rooms were outdated but clean and the staff was friendly. We opted for the breakfast which was pretty good.

Remember: This is a budget hotel. If you want something nicer, be prepared to pay CHF250 - 500.

Location: between the railroad and the lake cost a lot more. This hotel is very convenient for the town center and for the Metro rail, as well as buses. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and patissiers etc. within a short walk. Because it is in a commercial area you can expect street noise beginning around 7AM. The hotel gave me a pass for the local transport system - bus and Metro. I gather all the hotels do this, a really nice touch. You get one for every day of your stay.

My room: I took a single with a shared bathroom. No regrets. My room was on the ground floor. The main level had a small table good as a desk or for eating a takeaway meal, cable TV, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker/kettle, sink and a place for hanging clothes. I would have liked a "thing" to put my suitcase on. Steep stairs - more like a step ladder - led up to the mezzanine floor which was the size of my double bed plus a floor area about 4' or 1.2m wide along side of it with a bedside table and lamp. Surprise! The ceiling was about 4'6" high, just within reach when I lay in bed. So it's a bit of a crouch but unless you want bedtime gymnastics, was no problem.
The whole was modern and well decorated and I was very comfortable.

The shower and toilet: Very small, not great. The shower and the toilet are separate and appear to serve five rooms on the ground floor. Each is about 0.8m or 2'8" wide (or narrow!) and 2m or 6' long. In the shower room, the shower occupies about half of the floor area. The worst part is that there is no evident ventilation so the place is streaming and humid after the coolest shower. No room to dress and you're in a sweat already. Too bad.
The toilet and washbasin are in a separate similar size room. Very, very cramped and really too small for the task in both cases. It's a pity, as they let down what was an otherwise a pleasant experience.

Arrival, greetings and staff: I planned a late arrival and called ahead to ask about that. Good job I did. They lock the front door at 10PM so you need an access code. With that you get a programmed plastic key that opens the front door and your room. A helpful letter greets you in the reception area. Next morning I met the very nice, helpful staff. Reception opens at 7.30AM so be sure to make check out arrangements if you plan to leave early. Otherwise, checkout is 11AM.

Other: Breakfast is optional, about CHF12.

The hotel is not far from Metro station, and it is very easy to travel around with the transportation card. With the price not so expensive, I got what I needed for the short stay. The room is clean and big. It is quite at night.

The hubby and I subscribe to the Rick Steves philosophy of travel, packing light, avoiding the big chain hotels. Hence, the Hotel du Marche. It’s a short walk to the Riponne Metro stop, making it very convenient. While the beds are pretty skinny and on the harder side, and while we were here, personnel at the front desk was spotty, the breakfast buffet was very good and the convenient location more makes up for the small discomforts.

Lausanne makes a great jumping off point for so much in the area, and the proximity to the Metro makes the Hotel du Marche a great place to rest tired legs.

Very old hotel. Have to carry bags up a long flight of stairs to get to the elevator which is very small. There is free parking but there are only two spots and the hotel requires you to leave your car keys. The furniture, bed and bathrooms are very old but our room was a good size for Europe. Staff was very friendly and I really enjoyed interacting with them. Of course this is Switzerland and the prices are extremely high. If in any other country this room should be worth about $75/night rather than the $175 it costs.
