A great day trip. The chocolate train had beautiful, vintage coaches, stopped in the picturesque town of Gruyeres with its great castle and Fondue restaurants and then visited Cailers Chocolate factory for unlimited tastings. We had a great day and took many beautiful pictures.

The Golden Pass line runs from Montreux to Lucerne (or vice versa), a journey of 5 and a half hours in total, which we did in two parts, going first from Montreux to Interlaken, and then, a few days later, from Interlaken to Lucerne. All along both parts, we were entranced by the continually changing succession of gorgeous views: lush woods of tall trees on which the leaves were just starting to turn brown, dramatic white-capped mountains, rolling green valleys, stunning turquoise lakes, picturesque little towns. How lucky can one small country be having all of that? Even the cows we saw grazing near the train looked perfectly content.

But here’s the trouble: Although everyone talks about the Golden Pass line as if it’s one continuous thing, in fact it involves three separate trains and changes in two places, Zweisimmen and Interlaken. When you’re traveling with luggage as we and many other passengers were, it’s not much fun having to drag suitcases on and off trains at each place.

What’s more, only the Montreux-Zweisimmen leg is really on a special panoramic train. The Zweisimmen-Interlaken leg is on a very basic ordinary train, and the Interlaken-Lucerne leg is on a better but still regular train. It seems a bit deceptive and unfair to promote the “Golden Pass” line, and to charge extra for it, when two-thirds of the journey is on normal trains.

On the panoramic train itself, while it looks nice and has seats that seem to be wider and more luxurious in a regular train, there really didn’t seem to be anything that justifies the higher cost. The major difference was that it had upper windows instead of overhead luggage racks, but the point of those upper windows was lost on me — I guess the idea is to give more of a view, but actually all you see through them is the sky, and the regular windows that all trains have are big enough to see the views perfectly. And let’s be practical: Because those upper windows have replaced the luggage racks, people actually have nowhere to put their suitcases and bags, and have to let them pile up in the carriage entrance, push them between or under seats, or hold them on their laps if the train is full (as it was when we traveled). Doesn’t seem to be very clever planning, which is surprising when we’re talking about the Swiss.

It does seem that a bit of a rethink is needed on this line. The trains on all three legs of the journey should be of the same standard as each other — either downgrade the panoramic train and have the whole route run by regular trains, or upgrade the regular trains and have a special panoramic train running the entire route. Create a place for luggage storage on any panoramic trains. And coordinate things so that passengers going all the way don’t have to change trains in the middle. I understand that in December 2018, they’re going to make it so the trains will run from Montreux to Interlaken without passengers having to change trains at Zweisimmen, which is good. But more needs to be done before this line can truly be called golden.

We could not book a seat online. We went in to a station and were able to reserve a seat for 8 euros each. Not sure that a seat reservation was necessary in November on a weekday as many seats were available. The ride was breathtaking and I highly recommend this line. We stopped at the chocolate factory and visited Gruyere as well. Beautiful day. Especially with all the leaves changing.

If you don't fancy walking, this is the best way to see the mountains and the lake from the top! Beautiful views guaranteed all the way.
