Stayed at Hotel Helvetie Montreux for 2 nights in June 07. Opposite casino (worth a visit) and well situated generally. The hotel belies the rather inauspicious entrance, with big rooms, sitting area and verandah with a partial view of the lake. Plenty cupboard space. Foyer impressive. Free bus passes for the town a nice touch. Only challenge was getting hot water from the shower - in the absence of Stephen Hawking, gave up in the end. Otherwise fine, good breakfast too.

This is a very old hotel. Our room was not very clean. The bathroom was very small and dirty. We luckily only stayed here one night. I didn't dare take a shower. If you have a lot of luggage I would definitely take the bus to the hotel. It takes about 15 minutes from the train station to walk here. There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel. The free breakfast was not good. In fact it was the worst we ate in Switzerland. We were there for 15 nights. The castle is amazing and definitely worth the time.

According to the map of Montreux that we picked up at the Tourist Ofice, this hotel dates from the 1800s and was once called "Hotel de Paris." Today, it is furnished throughout with antiques or antique-style furnishings. When you step into the beautiful lobby, you might think that you went back in time.

The Hotel Helvetie is situated on Avenue du Casino, pretty much in the heart of the city, a very short walk from the lake. It is about a ten minute walk from the train station, although it may take longer if you aren't sure where you're going and have lots of luggage.

Our room was on the fifth floor and had a view of the lake and mountains, albeit partially obstructed by other buildings. The room's furnishings were again antique-style but the room did have a modern TV. A buffet breakfast was included that was similar to the other buffet breakfasts we had in other Swiss cities (breads, cereals, yogurt, cheeses, fruits, cold cuts, fruit juices, cofee, tea) but the restaurant in which it was served had by far the best ambiance.

My wife and I were very happy with our stay at this hotel and would stay here again. We liked Montreux so much that we definately will be going back. We visited several other cities and towns along the Swiss Riveria, and I recommend Montreux over all the others as a place to stay. We travelled all over Switzerland, and Lugano and Montreux were our two favorite cities.

Having arrived at Geneva airport, we found our luggage awaiting us by the time we got to the carousel. We've never had such prompt and efficient service. The railway station is just down an escalator from the airport and our train to Montreux was already there. It takes a little while to adjust to Swiss efficiency, compared to everywhere else. Everything seems to be on time with no fuss. The train journey to Montreux along Lake Geneva is delightful, and the hotel is just a ten minute easy walk away.

From arrival to departure we found all the staff to be friendly, helpful and courteous. The bedroom suite was spacious and clean. Crisp linen and a comfortable bed. Despite the hotel being in the centre of Montreux and no double glazing, it is surprisingly quiet at night. Breakfast was continental but with plenty of choice, and good coffee and tea. Although there are many fine places to eat in Montreux, we soon found the hotel was the best value for dinner. Unlike most other eating places we experienced, we were pleased to find that smoking is not allowed in the dining room. Very good food in pleasant surroundings, but most notable were the dining room staff, all of whom were charming and all spoke good English.

This is not the poshest hotel in Montreux, but is very good value for money. It still has much of its Belle Epoque grandeur and is so convenient for the lakeside, shops, trolleybuses, trains and boats. Montreux is delightful but is also a good centre for touring. We'll be back soon.

  • Liked — Good location and courteous staff
  • Disliked — Bedroom carpet was clean but worn.
  • Tips/Secrets — When visiting, try the rooftop for its views.

Like other reviewers, I booked this hotel primarily based on the reasonable price, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw how close we were to the lake. It was a one block walk and we enjoyed a very nice dinner at a cafe on the water. We booked a triple and had a huge room, plus a two-room bath (one for the toilet and tub/shower and one with a sink, linen closet and very large dressing area). It was June and a bit warm and we were immediately brought a fan when we requested.
As another reviewer mentioned, we had a rooftop out our window. It actually looked like a rooftop porch that had been rather neglected; other rooms even had balconies facing it. It had a bit of charm and could be lovely with a little care. I didn't think to worry about opening the windows, as it seems quite safe in Europe compared to U.S., plus the fan kept us cool.
The common spaces were very large and decorated in an old world style. I found it charming rather than shabby. It certainly wasn't 5 stars, but then we weren't paying $800+ either. The breakfast was nice. It was interesting to note a comment by another reviewer about rudeness from the breakfast staff. We had a waitress who was very snippy because we sat at a table that required us to pull up another chair. The only other table had a reserved sign on it and she seemed to think we should have known to sit there anyway.
Otherwise the staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke very good English. I forgot to reserve parking, but the staff was helpful in giving me a map for parking right around the corner. There was no charge from 7pm to 7am, which was nice.
I would prefer a place right on the lake, but it is cost prohibitive. I would choose this hotel again.

I stayed at the Helvetie whilst attending a conference in Lausanne, as hotels in Lausanne were incredibly expnsive and nothing special. Definitely preferred Montreux and the Helvetie was a comfortable and (for Switzerland) reasonable value choice. Checking in went without a hitch, the reception staff all spoke English altohugh were encouraging with my halting French. I agree with previous reveiws that there are huge communal areas downstairs that were always empty and with the exception of breakfast I saw very few people dining at the hotel. My room was enormous but bathroom and toilet very small (had to life the loo seat to open the door!) The bath was a small "hip bath" with a hand held shower attachment and the toiletries provided by the hotel weren't great (was glad I'd taken my own). Whilst there is a mini bar it is expensive and there are no tea and coffee facilities in the rooms. The balcony was pleasant for an evening drink looking out over the mountains although the view of the lake is spoilt by some very ugly blocks of flats directly opposite the hotel. Very handy for the railway station which was about a 10 minute walk and buses stop outside the hotel. The staff were very honest - I left my hand bag in the bar one evening and it was waiting for me intact at reception the next morning. My only criticism apart from the bathroom facilities, whihc weren't fantastic relates to the staff on duty for breakfast. Two of the three were very surly and unfriendly and extremely irritated if you popped in for breakfast after about 9.30 (breakfast finished at 10) - odd as only continental breakfast on offer, so you are unlikely to be lingering more than 10-15 minutes in any case. Rather took the edge off what was otherwise a pleasant stay.
Recommend the Chalet Paradise next to the elevator to the Avenue des Alpes for a good value meal served by waiters who were delighted to serve and had a great sense of humour, the Zurcher on the Avenue de Casino also served a very nice lunchg with lovely views over the lake.

Spent two nights at this delightful hotel. Although a little older than some hotels, it certainly has a wonderful charm and character about it. Staff were very helpful and the hotel is comfortable walking distance to the waterfront, station etc. We certainly have retained fond memories of our visit there. Rooms are very large and airy, with balcony overlooking gardens. There are plenty of common areas downstairs, which have been furnished in keeping with the style of the hotel. Straight out of an Edwardian Novel. Thoroughly recommend this one.
