For about $100/night you get a studio appartment with free wifi(about 15 megabits/s download speed),a kitchenette that has a cooktop, fridge and a kitchen sink. There was no oven or microwave oven. It is clean and quiet and is right infront of the tram that goes to the airport(number 10) and the one that goes to the city centre. The bathroom is small but adequate with a shower and a two-flush toilet. There is a laundry room downstairs. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There is an automatic key pick up and drop machine so you can check in and out even if the office is closed. It is about a half an hour walk to the city centre.

If you need to stay in Zurich for a few days but don’t fancy spending about 200 CHF per night and (steeply) upwards for a typical Swiss hotel, this is a good choice intended mostly for visitors who are staying for a few days and longer. It’s very conveniently located close to the Irchel tram-stop, which is only a 25 minute tram ride from the airport. If you take the tram from the airport, be aware that you should simply admit defeat at the ticket machine because you won’t find Irchel or the University of Zurich among the listed stops, and the Swiss tram inspectors impose 100 CHF fines on people who buy the wrong tickets; just buy a Zurich whole-day, anywhere ticket for about 12 CHF and be done with it.

The apartments themselves are located in a splendid old building at the corner of Winterthur and Langensteinen streets, as close as it’s possible to get for pedestrian access to the Uni. Internet is supposedly free, but in my experience was infuriatingly poorly documented, to the extent that I could not log on once during a four day stay. You are supposed to manually enter a particular wireless network ID, but that network then never appears among the list of available networks even after manually entering it. To add to the confusion, two additional network names appear, both associated by name with Accademia; one is encrypted and does not accept the password issued for the network that does not appear, while one is non-encrypted but will not let you use it until you enter a password, and – surprise! – also does not accept the supplied password. Because no staff are available except during work hours, you are utterly out of luck if you need to connect to the Internet and need to be away during working hours.

I stayed in both a “maxi” and a standard apartment. They both had a refrigerator and a basic collection of utensils, cutlery and crockery. Both were small, sparsely furnished, lacked dedicated work surfaces such as desks, and were quite poorly lit. In the “maxi” apartment, for example, the “kitchen” or “dining” area – really just a tiny table next to the sink – had no lighting at all with the exception of an under-counter fluorescent lamp above the sink area that did not work. I ended up using the flashlight built into my alarm clock for table illumination when entertaining a friend there. For purchasing supplies a Coop and a Migros are within easy walking distance. There was only one towel in the “maxi” and two in the “mini” – go figure. Televisions tunable to CNN were present but were old, basic models, neither of which had fully functional remote controls and thus were difficult to use, offering minimal respite from the bizarre lack of the promised Internet connectivity. Basically, you are camping in Zurich, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In the “maxi”, on the 2nd floor, I was quite plagued by, in my experience, an old Zurich problem associated with staying in old houses converted into apartments; noisy and inconsiderate upstairs neighbors who, though certainly human, acoustically resemble hyperactive rhinoceri wearing bowling balls on their hooves as they bumble about endlessly on thin, squeaky floorboards. But that’s part of apartment life in Zurich. Bring earplugs.

Overall the Accademia apartments are a (by Zurich standards) relatively economical choice if you want to stay close to the Uni. An alternative is the Coronado hotel, which is more expensive and charges steeply for Internet access, and is close by, just opposite the next tram station, Milchbuch. In my experience it’s quieter than the Accademia and the Internet access, though expensive, does actually work. However for the right person at the right time for the right reason, the Accademia Apartments are quite adequate.

Room Tip: Get a maxi rather than a mini apartments if you're even the tiniest bit claustrophobic. However...

Warning, this is not a hotel. You get a small apartment with a kitchen (if you wish). It is optimal if you prefer to make your own breakfast like myself and for longer stays in Zurich. Room service is once a week. The staff is excellent and there is a laundromat/internet. It is located conveniently if you do business with either ETH or the University of Zurich.

Room Tip: ask for a room that has a shower. I recommend room 04.
