Liked the area of old town Zurich with all the shops and restaurants. Was a good way to spend the afternoon with the family. Most of the buildings were not as old as we are used to in other main european cities but were still aged with a modern feel to them. We crossed the bridge to the east of old town alongside the church and got our Swiss souvenirs. Parking in old town seems hard, but we got there before the restaurants opened for lunch and got lucky finding a spot. Its about 5 CHF for two hour max parking. Meters do take euro coins starting at .50 and up.

Zurich old town is not as great as I thought.
By default it cannot be really compared with other city like in Paris, Prague, Ghent, etc.
The narrow road in the old town is quite enjoyable to stroll around, but that's it.

Very nicely presented with tourist signs everywhere, streets and buildings are well signed, can be easily done by foot, seemed quite safe even at night, no matter if you have a map or not you will be not lost, Limmat river is on one side and Bahnhof strasse on the other, the lake is on the south side and Bahnhof is on the opposite end. There are many tourists but I would not say it's crowded, lots of places to eat with different price ranges and themes ( not so many Swiss as you will expect, I would say at least 50% are Italian, but not just ordinary pizza-pasta places, many places look like Swiss and have German names but at a closer look you can have the surprise it's thai - look at the menu by the entrance! ), many of them with a nice view - the ones by the river especially, and there are also lots of little piazettas quietly hidden just behind the more crowded bigger streets. Shopping is also great deal here, you can find almost everything, big department stores and a mall, big names and also a lot of small stores, concept stores, local artists, antiques, books, design...you name it.
We planned to take a guided toor by foot in the Old City, but it would have been at 15.00 and it happened to be one of the hottest days one can found in Zurich - almost 30° C, and the tour was supposed to last 2 hours, so we just made it all by ourselves, with the guides provided at the hotel, we've seen the major churches, Linderhof, the promenade by the Limmat River, Augustinerstrasse and the area around Grossmunster. At the end, we took the river boat from the last station at the lake and had a nice ride back, seeng the same places from a different angle.
Definitely recommend to have a walk through the Old City, evdn if you only have a couple of hours.

Zurich is a nice place, still not a very historic one. So do not plan too expect too much and do not plan to stay too much time here. I would suggest to spend one-two days in Zurich and then move on to Lucern and other cities or go to the mountains. Then you will see not only the "urban" Switzerland.
