The Fraumunster dates from 853, first a convent and then, in 1524, it became a Reformed Protestant church. It houses the 3rd largest church organ in Switzerland with 7000 pipes and 95 stops. You will also find transept windows by the Swiss artist Augusto Giacometti - beautifully different. In addition Marc Chagall created 6 windows for the Fraumunster. Five windows were inaugurated in 1970 when Chagall was 83. These 5 windows depict biblical scenes with stunning color and brilliance. The 6th window was completed when Chagall was 90 - an unusual rosette depicting scenes from the Book of Genesis. There is a fee to enter this church. I would recommend going here. Such an important piece of Zurich history!

You don’t see a lot of churches charging an entry fee, but this one does. It is not very interesting compared to the many other churches in Europe. I’d skip it. It was just okay.

People told us we should visit the Fraumunster to see the windows by Marc Chagall. Those windows are beautiful, but there is so much more than that to see here.

There is a 5CHF entrance fee, which is well worth paying. We recommend the audio guide instead of the written guide (they are included in the price) as it plays examples of the organ music. The long history of the munster is unusual and very interesting, and is well explained.

Highly recommended!

It is an 11th century church. It used to be an abbey and you can see the aristocracy oozing... It is one of the prominent landmarks in and of Zurich. It is mostly known for it's glass windows. Very serene once inside.A must visit.
