We spent about 4 hours in this museum, which is very easy to find as it's right next to Hauptbahnhof, in a landmark building - it's impossible to miss it if you take a walk along Limmat river a little bit out of the old city to the north, the towers of the ancient castle catch your eye. The excibition is nicely presented, from ancient times to our days, there were some pieces of extraordinary golden jewelery from prehistoric times as well as the biggest golden bowl (over 900 g), also prehistoric, all artefacts found close to Zurich, some by chance. The stained glass excibition was impressive, I have never seen such meticulous work in stained glass, it was almost like miniatures. Some objects of decorative tableware made of gold and silver were presented in a showcase with mirror behind and on individual rotating stands, which allowed one to see them from every possible angle. There was an exhibition of historic costumes, all authentic, many artefacts and documents related to Swiss history, which turned out to be not so peaceful as we perceive it, this being one of the notoriously neutral countries;the wealth of its citizens is also quite recent - some 159 years ago powerty was still a big issue.
Swiss political system over time was well presented, many artefacts connected to notorious people which have influenced the country's destiny, also there was an area dedicated to people not born in Switzerland but who have became an important part of its history.
There is a special area in a tower dedicated to warfare - armours, arms, uniforms of Swiss army and especially mercenaries that played an important role in european wars. Also there were interiours reconstructed from the castles and wealthy citisens homes.
If you love museums and history, it's a nice place to visit, I guess elder kids would like it too.
Maybe a little more attentions is to be payed to the direction of visit - it must have a plan perharps, no signs as the recommended route to follow and we found ourselves walking against the timeline once in a while.
