“Engimatt during the summer”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

I stayed there several times during the summer and loved the hotel. The hotel is near the city center and very close to the lake (both walking distance). Each room has a balcony - which is nice during the summer months, a nespresso coffee machine and an extensive range of tv programs e.g. almost all UK channels. The room rate includes breakfast (which is not typical in Zurich) - other hotels charge usually up to CHF 32 per breakfast. The restaurant has an outdoor dining area and the food is excellent. In addition there is a tennis court, sauna and a cigar smoking room (cigars can be purchased in the hotel).

We spent just one night in this hotel. The (luxury) room on the first floor was of good size. The bathroom was very very small.
But the worst item is the furniture, which is outdated and especially our beds were in very bad shape.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room.

A perfect hotel for business of for visiting Zurich, in a quiet area just outside the very center.
The area is very well connected with Tram to the city, and nearby is shopping center/restaurant area called Sihlcity with lots of choice for meals and entertainment.

The hotel restaurant is refined and serves tastefully arranged meals. Room service is also available for some courses from the restaurant menu.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant or in your room. An excellent international breakfast with healthy food plus choice of eggs bacon etc. - great wholewheat bread selection!
The hotel rooms are very well sound-proofed, the beds are new and comfortable - pillows are typical down feather pillows. Bathrooms are large and luminous.

Stayed here for one night last week. Probably was a little lucky as I was given one of the bigger rooms with a little sitting room as well as a bedroom. About 10 mins walk from the lake so might be a considered a little way out. Other than everything fine, quite peaceful, reasonable breakfast an evening meal - king prawn curry is very good. Not cheap by any means but then nothing is in Zurich.

My wife and I stayed two nights and took advantage of the "Euro" rate, which is a good deal if you remember to bring the correct amount Euro cash. I, of course, did not and was penalized for my mistake. Still, for the size of the room, the parking garage, the extensive breakfast, and included wifi, I think it was a very good value. Just a few minutes from public transport, we had no problem getting around day or night.

Now for a few minor complaints: The hotel's restaurant isn't open very late, and was more expensive than comparable restaurants nearby; our room was categorized as "mountain view", but the view was considerably obscured by trees and buildings behind the hotel; the free wifi only allows one device at a time, so my wife and I could not work simultaneously on two laptops.

Room Tip: Call hotel booking service, don't book online

I stayed there two nights. Had to check out and re-check in because I had made two separate reservations for two room types (single, standard and double, comfort). The reason for that was that I got the rooms at a reduced rate through a special offer on tripadvisor.com and the cheaper room (single, standard) was only available for the first night.

The hotel is small and in a quiet area. It is a 10 minute stroll from Enge railway station (which has direct service to the airport). It is clean and well kept. I didn't make use of any hotel amenities, except for breakfast, so I cannot speak of those. Breakfast was nice: a buffet with the usual stuff (eggs---scrambled and soft boiled, assorted sausages/bacon, cereals, fruits, cheeses, yogurts, bread, etc.) I wish it had some vegetables too (cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.) But I don't really expect those in European or American hotels.

The first night I spent in a single, standard room. It was very small (the smallest I've ever been in) but was newly refurbished and squeaky clean. The bathroom was little more than a tiny walk-in closet. There wasn't even room for a bath, only a shower stall. However, everything was there, clean, and in good working order. The bed mattress was nothing to write home about. Internet wifi was good. There was a balcony with no view to speak of. The "list price" of the room was CHF 330 (approximately EUR 270), which I consider to be exorbitant. Through the special offer I paid EUR 132.50 (including breakfast and all taxes).

The second night I spent in a double, comfort room. This room had decent size---a little bigger than the normal size of a standard room in hotels of this type and price. I don't remember exactly, but I think the standard rate here was CHF 470 (approx. EUR 385). I paid 192.50 (including breakfast and all taxes). This room had more wear and tear than the previous one, but was still in excellent shape. Again, balcony had no view to speak of. The lighting in the room was very dim. (I'm used to dim lighting in hotel rooms, but this was dimmer than usual.) The bathroom was of standard size, included a bath, and had all the usual amenities. Again, all clean and nice. Internet wifi was horrible, making it virtually impossible to get any work (or plain Internet surfing) done.

In short, the hotel is clean and reasonably comfortable, but at its standard rate is not good value.

Last but not least, the nasty surprise I had upon checkout. The special offer stated clearly that payment would have to be made in cash in Euros. No problem; I came prepared with exact change. Well, they don't accept Euro coins. Annoying, but again not a problem; I just overpaid with Euro bills. The change, however, was made in Swiss Francs. When I gave the receptionist a surprised look, her response was "This is Switzerland, sir." Apparently when they take your Euros they're not in Switzerland. So essentially they made me change Euros into Swiss francs at the hotel rate, which I then had to convert back into Euros on my way out of Switzerland. It's not a lot of money, of course, but I don't appreciate this kind of treatment. Needless to say, none of this policy was mentioned in the special offer.

Dear Sir,

We would like to thank you for staying with us and writing such a detailed review about your stay.

We are responding especially to the last part of your comment, about the payment in Euro. Since no bank will take coins in Euro and change them we are not able to accept any of them. On the other hand we do accept Euro as a payment but since Francs is our national currency the change will be in Swiss Francs.

Thanks to your comment we have now changed the information sent to any booker of the Euro special after doing the reservation stressing these points.

We hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Zurich and would be pleased to welcome you again to the Hotel Engimatt.

The hotel have a good location, rooms are clean.. but not cozy.... there is no fitness and no swimmingpool...

I think for the price of a room in engimatt you can have other hotel with better designed rooms, if do you look for an hotel with an old styled room engimatt it's yours.
