“Wonderful location on Limmat River but Cramped room/Tiny Bath”
Reviewed 31 October 2009

The Zum Storchen is a superbly located, small boutique hotel in the Old Town area of Zurich, directly on the Limmat river. As others have said, the location is what you are paying for. The staff is courteous and professional, though somewhat distanced and "superior" in overall attitude. It seemed to be the "Buisness Professional" received more welcoming status then the average couple/traveler.
Our room was located on the second floor.....if you stay here, request NOT to be on the second floor!!! While the room was facing the river, it was also over the restaurant below where breakfast is served and the noise from the staff setting up for service woke us up on both mornings at 6 AM. Sleeping in past this was NOT an option due to the noise below. Not exactly a relaxing way to start the day!
The room was lovely as far as decor, very charming, but also quite cramped especially for the price. The bathroom was TINY, and whilst sitting on the commode one would practically have their knees in the sink. We are pretty average sized people, not large at all, and found the bathroom positively claustrophobic. The shower is a tub/shower combo and also VERY cramped. The bathroom shuts with not even a regular door, but a pocket sliding door. Far and away the worst bathroom of our Switzerland trip, the most cramped room...and...the most expensive!!
We had requested a room with a balcony if possible.....we love balconies....their rooms do not have any balconies but several floors DO have rooms with full french doors that open to the river. One of these would have been appreciated but was not received, and room was booked almost a month in advance. There seemed to be little effort to accomodate requests taken here.
Room contains amenities such as electronic safe, mini bar, robe/slippers, toilitries, etc. The bed, should be noted, very comfortable with adjustable head/foot rests and quality bedding....though I did squash 2 bugs crawling across that quality bedding!

The breakfast (included and well should be for the price) was very good. The usual buffet of cheeses, meats, breads, fruits, fresh juices, etc and also scrambled eggs with bacon/ham in a warmer. We actually dined at the restaurant twice and the food was excellent as was the service, although my game gravy that was to be served with my venison the second night was sadly forgotten. Overall though the food was excellent and service good.

The Zum Storchen bar is outstanding. The bartender has been there for years and really knows how to make a quality drink. Great atmosphere as well. The outdoor cafe below is also charming, great atmosphere and you can't beat the location.
Come for drinks at the Zum Storchen bar, or on the terrace or outdoor cafe, even dinner, but unless you are fixated on staying directly on the river spend you lodging dollars elsewhere where you get more value. If you choose to stay, enjoy the view but be prepared for fairly cramped quarters especially in regards to the bathroom.

Our stay at the Zum Storchen was perfect. The check-in was flawless. Our room was located right by the Limmat river and about 400 meters to the lake Zurich. The room decor was traditional but tastefully done. Location is in the center of the old town, right across from the city hall. The hotel breakfast bar is one of the best in Zurich. One of the best boutique hotel in the world!

Even though this is not not a 5 star hotel, it certainly is at least as good if not better and probably the most charming hotel in Zurich! The location in the heart of the city, although calm and right at the boarder of the river Limmat, can't be topped. And if you are not convinced, the fantastic breakfast (buffet) on the terrace with view of the mountains will convince you after all. Great staff, fantastic city!

We have stayed in the hotel several times with our child and have enjoyed it everytime. It's got the perfect location in the city (only hotel on the river Limmat) and in the summer you can have breakfast on the outside terrace, overlooking the river with a view towards the lake and even (on clear days) the mountains. Staff are friendly and very helpful, so the service actually feels personal, made easier by the relatively small size of the hotel

We only ever stayed in the corner rooms, which are not huge, but big enough for a baby bed, the bathrooms are small . This is not the poshest hotel in town (probably the Widder), its got no swimmingpool etc - but for a pleasant stay right in the city centre, one minute away from the shopping area on Bahnhofstrasse and only a 10 min walk from the station we will definitely go back.

My partner and I stayed at the Zum Storchen, it was our second trip to Zurich in 6 months and we had been very disappointed with the Zurich Sheraton
which was incredibly tatty and overrated. The Zum Storchen however was a delightful contrast. First of all the location is perfect, situated right in the centre of town on the river Limmat with all round beautiful views of the city and surrounding hills, and everywhere walking distance.
The Hotel is instantly recognisable as it has a giant stork's nest complete with giant stork perched on the roof overlooking the lovely architecture of old Zurich. On the ground floor there is a large cafe with outside seating and fur wraps to keep you warm as you drink the house gluhwein (delicious!)
Our room was on the top floor on the corner (see photo) overlooking the mountains and river leading to the lake as well as the historic square, (where Matt Dillon was filming a movie at the time). The room was spacious, quiet and nicely furnished.
The next big plus for this hotel is the restaurant which in my opinion is really fabulous. We had eaten there in the summer on the terrace looking over the clear water of the Limmat below and we were not disappointed this time round sitting inside the restaurant which is comfortable and full of teutonic crests on old beams, and the food still as good as we remembered, the service is second to none. Although I would not describe this as a family outing hotel or for anyone with a tight budget, most of the restaurant clientelle were either businessmen or well heeled Swiss.
The hotel staff were efficient and friendly - the concierge suggested a day trip for me which was just a short walk to the Tourist information service at the station, where I found a trip to Luzerne and Mount Pilatus which was a full day and very enjoyable, even in late November with gloomy weather. In the evening we went to a fabulous Jazz Bar at the Widder Hotel which has a very nice restaurant as well and is located just around the corner.
I would like to go back to Zurich as it is steeped in history, clean and easy to get around, also there are so many attractions from markets to mountains to spas and just relaxing in fresh air with great views. In the summer much activity goes on around the lake including bars on floating stages to al fresco dancing/dining in the evening. In the winter there is skiing locally as well as accessibility by train/road to the more famous slopes of Davos and Klosters.
I would definitely recommend Zum Storchen and look forward to returning.

We stayed 3 nights and had a great room. Breakfast was included, buffet style and outside on the terrace. We ate in the restaurant one evening and sat outside overlooking the river. The service and food was first class. All hotel staff were excellent and extremely friendly. No quality hotel in Europe is cheap, but it helps when the stay was as enjoyable as ours. The only slight complaint was trying to get afternoon tea in their downstairs sitting area the service there was not good. Their outside cafe was full, so we opted to sit inside and gave up trying to find a waiter. The location of the hotel proved to be ideal if on vacation, within easy walking distance to the lake and in the old town.

We have just come back from a 3 night stay at the Zum Storchen.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with this hotel, it is very pricey for what it is and it's only really the location that warrants the price!
The staff are all very friendly and eager to help.
The rooms are nothing special really - i've stayed in cheaper hotels with better rooms!
The breakfast could've been a lot better - there's not a lot of choice.
Overall, I probably wouldn't stay here again.
Thanks
