The Zum Storchen is a superbly located, small boutique hotel in the Old Town area of Zurich, directly on the Limmat river. As others have said, the location is what you are paying for. The staff is courteous and professional, though somewhat distanced and "superior" in overall attitude. It seemed to be the "Buisness Professional" received more welcoming status then the average couple/traveler.
Our room was located on the second floor.....if you stay here, request NOT to be on the second floor!!! While the room was facing the river, it was also over the restaurant below where breakfast is served and the noise from the staff setting up for service woke us up on both mornings at 6 AM. Sleeping in past this was NOT an option due to the noise below. Not exactly a relaxing way to start the day!
The room was lovely as far as decor, very charming, but also quite cramped especially for the price. The bathroom was TINY, and whilst sitting on the commode one would practically have their knees in the sink. We are pretty average sized people, not large at all, and found the bathroom positively claustrophobic. The shower is a tub/shower combo and also VERY cramped. The bathroom shuts with not even a regular door, but a pocket sliding door. Far and away the worst bathroom of our Switzerland trip, the most cramped room...and...the most expensive!!
We had requested a room with a balcony if possible.....we love balconies....their rooms do not have any balconies but several floors DO have rooms with full french doors that open to the river. One of these would have been appreciated but was not received, and room was booked almost a month in advance. There seemed to be little effort to accomodate requests taken here.
Room contains amenities such as electronic safe, mini bar, robe/slippers, toilitries, etc. The bed, should be noted, very comfortable with adjustable head/foot rests and quality bedding....though I did squash 2 bugs crawling across that quality bedding!
The breakfast (included and well should be for the price) was very good. The usual buffet of cheeses, meats, breads, fruits, fresh juices, etc and also scrambled eggs with bacon/ham in a warmer. We actually dined at the restaurant twice and the food was excellent as was the service, although my game gravy that was to be served with my venison the second night was sadly forgotten. Overall though the food was excellent and service good.
The Zum Storchen bar is outstanding. The bartender has been there for years and really knows how to make a quality drink. Great atmosphere as well. The outdoor cafe below is also charming, great atmosphere and you can't beat the location.
Come for drinks at the Zum Storchen bar, or on the terrace or outdoor cafe, even dinner, but unless you are fixated on staying directly on the river spend you lodging dollars elsewhere where you get more value. If you choose to stay, enjoy the view but be prepared for fairly cramped quarters especially in regards to the bathroom.
