Stayed at the Altstadt hotel for 2 nights in September. This 3 star hotel is basic, but clean. Good quality if you compare it to other hotels in the area.
Likes: free wifi (but not always working), good breakfast, bed
Dislikes: no airco, bathroom was a bit basic, sometimes nosy

We had just finished a tour in France but wanted to visit Zurich. We selected this hotel from previous reviews and because of location. It was the right choice. We arrived a little early but our room was ready so we were able to check in. There were three adults in our group and, although the room was not a large one, there was enough space for three beds. We were on the top floor with skylight windows. The bathroom was smallish but, again, very clean and well appointed. The air conditioner worked well. Breakfast was good. The staff were friendly and helpful. Free WiFi worked very well with no issues. The room key situation was a little different than we had experienced at other hotels. A panel was located in the entrance hall by the "desk". When leaving the hotel you would insert your room key into the corresponding key hole on the panel and remove a house key. This house key would let you back into the hotel if the doors were locked and there was no staff available. You would then place the house key in the panel to retrieve your room key. Thought it was a great idea. Considering it is Zurich, the value was great! We would return to this hotel.

This unique property is in a perfect location and very easy to find - quick tram ride from the train station plus 3 minute walk to hotel.
Zurich was the last leg of our vacation and our two nights at Hotel Altstadt were excellent. We arrived later in the evening and were a bit surprised by the check-in as the hotel bar is connected to the front desk. Casual atmosphere but service was great and the gentleman that checked us in was professional, welcoming and very helpful. Room was furnished very well with modern furniture and fixtures and made the most of the space. It was very clean and functional. Bathroom was small but again functional.
Breakfast room was very bright with many windows, and nicely set up and the selection for breakfast was very good.
The little bar connected to the hotel is great and seemed to attract a lot of people throughout the day and evening for snacks and drinks with tables inside as well as outside.
I had noticed on some reviews that there were comments of the internet connection being poor, but this must have been fixed since I was given a code for wireless internet and it worked perfectly. Great connection.
Location was definitely one of the reasons we selected this hotel because we wanted to be in the old town and we are definitely glad that we did.
Would highly recommend.

The location is ideal, in the historic centre of Zurich. Unfortunately the street is relatively noisy – from 5am… All made worse by the absence of air conditioning in the rooms, which makes it impossible to sleep without opening the windows when it’s hot…

The rooms themselves are quite basic and small, but clean. The artworks on the walls help to give them a bit of character however. Windows are quite large so the rooms are well lit. This is not the case of the bathroom, which is rather dark. The shower is very basic, as are the amenities (two minuscule sachet shampoos, few towels).

The breakfast room is quite nice but for the rest this hotel is totally lacking in terms of common areas. It doesn’t even have a proper reception; checkin and checkout are done from the entrance corridor, through an opening connecting the said corridor with the bar located on the ground floor, allowing the bar tender to deal with the hotel’s customers… a bit strange…

Overall this is a decent, simple hotel in a great location. Unfortunately it appears to be rather expensive for what it offers…
