I had to put 3/5 because TripAdvisor won't let me give 3.5, but that's my score for this hotel. Here's why....
Good things first.
This hotel is really clean, just sparking, and that can only be great when you're staying somewhere. The staff are super, very helpful, polite, friendly and very welcoming. You couldn't ask for more from them. They were informative and they even offered my colleague and I a bottle of water each in the morning to take with us for our journey when we left.
I love that the hotel had real keys. Proper keys you had to put in the lock, so none of that faffing around when you get upstairs and the magnetic "key" you've been given doesn't work and you have to go all the way back downstairs to get another, which can seem like a long journey when you've been travelling and are tired and just want to sleep.
The rooms are spacious and have everything you could need. There's a mix between a wood burning stove and a real fire in the lobby of the hotel, which makes it smell really homely when you walk in. There's an honesty bar with apples and things as well as the bar bit. Tea and water are free, and possibly coffee as well - although I can't remember and don't want to mislead anyone.
The hotel is also in a great location, close to transport links and Lake Zurich, really central.
So you might be wondering: why only 3.5?
Well, my room was on the first floor and I could hear everything the person in the room above was doing. Not what they were saying or the telly or anything, but if they walked to the bathroom, I heard it. If they moved their suitcase, I heard it. So that was a bit disconcerting and had I been spending more time in the room I think it would have annoyed me.
The bed in the room was small and I mean small. I'm not sure I've slept in a bed that size since I was a child. It was almost a single, but not quite. I was staying there alone, but I don't see why - when the room was more than big enough to house a double bed - I had to sleep in a single bed just because I was sleeping in the room on my own. The bed was also fairly short. I'm tall (not freakily, but just taller than average) and don't enjoy sleeping with my feet hanging down over the end of the bed, so this shaved marks off my final score.
Then finally the breakfast. The breakfast was ok, but the only "hot" option was the lukewarm scrambled egg, which looked particularly unappetising. I looked at them for three breakfasts, but didn't try them. My colleague said they were "okay". The cheese was nice, but fairly bland and unexciting, sticking to "safe" cheeses rather than those with great flavour, eg Philadelphia, brie, Babybel. There was cereal and stuff, and I'm sure a lot of people really like a continental breakfast, but I do like having a bit more than that. There was a good selection: cake; cold meats; yoghurts and selection of bread. What I'm saying is it wasn't a bad breakfast, nothing was off or old, but nothing really stood out, and I guess that's what I want in a hotel breakfast. I want something really nice, something that makes me want to come down and have breakfast. I mean, I'm working away, I have to find my joy somewhere and for me it's at breakfast. This one just didn't grab me, but it was totally edible and I'm sure some people really love it.
So that's why it's a 3.5. But all the things listed above could easily be changed. It wouldn't take much, but it would make a massive difference to guests, I think.
