“Excellent Old City hotel”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Stayed here for one night to enable us to explore the old city. Hotel location is superb - right in the old city, close to a tram stop and with easy access to bars and restaurants. It is very convenient for exploring the old city using the self guided walking tour provided by the hotel. Room was good, perfect for a short stay. Breakfast was fine although the hot food, mainly the scrambled egg, could have been better. Would stay again next time we visit Zurich.

We stayed at the apartment on the top floor. WOW!!! was our first impression. It is a very spacious and comfortable apartment. This apartment consists of 2 floors, and a roof top balcony with a view of the Grossmuster church. The decor consists of Ikea quality furnishing, but pleasant and functional. There are bathrooms (only shower) in top master room floor and lower floor (with a tub).

The apartment comes with a "full" kitchen, although there were not many things to use to make even a simple omelette - no cooking utensils, one small pot, one pan. We were not planning to do much cooking so it was not a problem, but we would have liked to have made some familiar snacks for our kids since we have been traveling for over a month, and a kitchen like such should be equipped and functional. When we arrived, the trash in the kitchen was full. There were beer bottles from last guests and also parts of machineries scattered in cabinets. There were empty boxes of dishwasher detergent. A light bulb was blown out and part of the kitchen was dark. Also, there were bottles of liqueur (for sale) in the fridge that were expired. It felt like a neglected kitchen.

The entry to apartment is across from the reception and breakfast building. The elevator is from 1st floor to 3rd floor only. The apartment is on 4th floor. So need to lug bags up the last flight of stairs from 3rd floor to 4th floor. The stairs in the apartment to the top master floor was kind of steep and narrow. Not most convinient since it is very hard to carry suitcases up, and therefore lots of climbing up and down. Not a good room for people who do not like stairs.

The master room on the top floor is an attic room with ceilings that drop to the floor at one end. Ventilation in this room is not too good. We open all windows and bugs fly in. Also when we were there the street noise from below lasted till about 2 to 3am every night! (The Hotel provides ear plugs!!!)

Breakfast was just average. Breakfast room was small and crowded, so eat fast and leave.

Location of hotel is GOOD!! Inside old town and 5 mins from the Grossmuster church. 15 mins walk to art museum. Take tram #4, and you get back to train station in less than 10 minutes, where the National historical museum, Banhofstraase, and the Tourist Info are. Closest tram stop is located across a church by the river just 2 mins walk round the corner from hotel.
Many good restaurant just minutes walk away. Also the famous sausage stand, Sternen Grill is just a few minutes walk away.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor, and I loved the place from the moment I stepped in! Nicely decorated, clean and spacious, and the balcony was a hit! Special thanks to the reception staff for their recommendations on tourist attractions and places to dine out. Breakfast was also good, freshly cooked and nicely served.

We stayed in the very spacious duplex apartment at the top of the new annex across the street, five of us with a couple of extra beds downstairs. We had only one night in Zurich, but this made it that much more special. We even bought a picnic dinner and ate it on the private roof deck, overlooking the Grossmunster church and the old town streets. My wife and I had our private bedroom suite and bathroom on the top floor, and the three "kids" (17-20) were downstairs, a perfect arrangement. The included breakfast was quite good. Service was good, at least the receptionists were friendly and helpful.

A couple of downsides: one can't drive right up to the hotel (we had rented a car to go into the mountains the next day), and it is pretty noisy at night, with the street sounds echoing around the stone streets and buildings, especially with the windows a bit open on a warm August evening. And it's a long way up the stairs or a tiny elevator which stops short one floor. No problem if you appreciate the extra exercise!

The location was certainly great for seeing the city. An excellent value overall.

Room Tip: If you do have a family, consider the duplex apartment if it's available. It truly is a special...

Dear richard_cambridge

Thank you very much for your nice comment.
We are aware of the downsides you mentioned. And we are terribly sorry because both of them are impossible to change. Since the building is under heritage protection we are happy to have a tiny elevator and the alley is just too tight for a car.
But we are always happy to assist with your luggage.

We would be delighted to welcoming you soon back in our Hotel.

We stayed at the 2-floor apartments on the 4th floor. Very clean, very friendly service. They provided several quality recommendations for places to visit and eat. But the best thing there was the roof balcony with very nice view. The hotel is small and in the center. Breakfast was with top quality products.

This cute little hotel in the old town area was very charming. I was able to walk to it from the Stadelhofen train station, which I took directly from the airport. The staff at the front desk was really nice and actually gave good recommendations on restaurants and places to go.

There was a hearty breakfast included: meats, cheeses, yogurts with toppings, eggs and breads. It was pretty filling to start a day of sightseeing.

The internet was a little spotty in the building I was in but the staff said that the router was down so hopefully it will be better once it's fixed.

Although the hotel is in the middle of town, the windows were very good at keeping out noise. And they had provided earplugs just in case!

I stayed here for an Ironman competition so I needed a centrally located hotel and cost efficient too. Whilst most hotels seem to inflate prices with demand, the Roessli seemed to remain very reasonable.

The staff sent me a personal email before arriving (even though I booked via an agent) to let me know where to park and that if I was in the Ironman that weekend they would be providing an early breakfast. It was a great personal touch, all before arriving.

It seemed like it was family run - it probably wasn't but just had that feel where all the staff were pulling together to make sure my stay was perfect - I will definitely go back to this hotel next year, it's really nice to know what you are going to get - so I hope this information is helpful to anyone with this hotel on their short-list.

Furthermore, I only live in Geneva, so if ever I go up to Zurich for a weekend I know exactly where to go.

Dean, Geneva, Switzerland

Room Tip: small hotel, so all rooms about the same I think.
