based on a recommendation by a German friend, we stayed here for a few days in both the Design Single Room and Design Double Room. It's a clean and well-appointed hotel, with a very nice and discreet Birch garden, which is uncommon in Zurich's city centre hotels. I liked its stark austere look (very instagrammable, if that's important to you!). The staff were friendly and helpful and provided maps and tended to our requests, including itinerary changes, with a smile. We had no issues with the services provided as well.
The rooms were comfortable, with nice touches like the Tivoli radio a clean-lined, uncluttered look. We also liked the nice big bath-tub (a relative luxury in smaller hotels in Zurich) that our larger room came with. However, do note that the shower and toilet in our rooms do not afford as much privacy as normal rooms as they are demarcated from the rest of the room by translucent screens, rather than walls. This also led to some water leakage out from the shower cubicle. We weren't particularly bothered by this, but you might need to be a bit careful not to slip.
In terms of location, the Gruelich is in a relatively quiet yet central location, which we liked, as it was nice and quiet at night. The easiest way to get to the big Zurich HB train station and the main streets like the Bahnhoffstrasse was to take the trams and buses from the Guterbanhof stop about 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel. The bus and tram rides to Zurich HB took barely longer. We found it very convenient. The hotel also rented out bikes, which was great because Zurich is indeed small enough to cycle about.
Like everything else in Zurich, it was relatively expensive for what you get, especially in comparison with similar sized European cities. But we realised after a couple of days, that this is just something you have to accept when on holiday in Switzerland.
So just enjoy!
