based on a recommendation by a German friend, we stayed here for a few days in both the Design Single Room and Design Double Room. It's a clean and well-appointed hotel, with a very nice and discreet Birch garden, which is uncommon in Zurich's city centre hotels. I liked its stark austere look (very instagrammable, if that's important to you!). The staff were friendly and helpful and provided maps and tended to our requests, including itinerary changes, with a smile. We had no issues with the services provided as well.

The rooms were comfortable, with nice touches like the Tivoli radio a clean-lined, uncluttered look. We also liked the nice big bath-tub (a relative luxury in smaller hotels in Zurich) that our larger room came with. However, do note that the shower and toilet in our rooms do not afford as much privacy as normal rooms as they are demarcated from the rest of the room by translucent screens, rather than walls. This also led to some water leakage out from the shower cubicle. We weren't particularly bothered by this, but you might need to be a bit careful not to slip.

In terms of location, the Gruelich is in a relatively quiet yet central location, which we liked, as it was nice and quiet at night. The easiest way to get to the big Zurich HB train station and the main streets like the Bahnhoffstrasse was to take the trams and buses from the Guterbanhof stop about 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel. The bus and tram rides to Zurich HB took barely longer. We found it very convenient. The hotel also rented out bikes, which was great because Zurich is indeed small enough to cycle about.

Like everything else in Zurich, it was relatively expensive for what you get, especially in comparison with similar sized European cities. But we realised after a couple of days, that this is just something you have to accept when on holiday in Switzerland.

So just enjoy!

Hi Bert

Thank you very much for your lovely comment!

The GREULiCH-staff do its best to to make the experience as pleasant as possible for our visitors.

It's true that the bathrooms of our Design Rooms do not afford as much privacy as normal hotel rooms in favour they impress with their unique design.

If you prefer bathrooms with more privacs we recommend you our Superior Double Room or the Design Lofts in the mainbuilding.

We would like to thank you for your visit and would be happy to welcome you in the near future at Hotel Greulich.

Best regards,

Florian Gänger

We spent one night at the Greulich Hotel and based on the hotel alone wished we had stayed for at least two nights in Zurich.

We stayed in a Loft Apartment with two adults and two children and were very impressed with not only the spacious size of the apartment but the large windows and the view from the apartment.

The Hotel is in a great location and was a convenient twenty minute walk into the Banhofstrasse Shopping District. The staff were very friendly and had it not be raining we would have accessed the free bikes available for guests.

Dear Stephen

It was a pleasure to count you and your family among our treasured guests. Thank you for your kind feedback!

What a pitty, that the weather was not performing its best summer part. Still, we hope that we may welcome you again and that you will discover the city with our Greulich bikes.

Finding a decent hotel in Zurich for an affordable price is very often a huge challenge. Zurich simlply is expensive if you do not earn your salary in Switzerland.

So far the hotels I like most in Zurich are the FourPoints by Sheraton and the 25hours Zurich West, where I stayed several times. This time both hotels were fully booked, so i tried the Greulich.
It was a very pleasant surprise. The rooms are very nicely designed and have a decent space. The bathroom/toilet construction is a bit unusual, but totally functional. Its a very quiet location. The beds are really comfortable and everybody I met was extremely friendly and helpful.
6 Minutes by bus from the central station and a closeby Tram station makes it easy accessible (since public transport is by far the quickest way to move within the rush hours in Zurich anyway).

Highly reommended! I will stay here again.

They've got a good thing at the Greulich with its modern design and environmental consciousness. The concrete construction and all rooms opening in to a court yard actually remind you a little of a prison cell block, but the walk to and from the court yard is pleasant, the staff extremely helpful, the food is great - it all fits together well. We walked from the train station and it took about 25 minutes, then later used the bus to go back which took about 10 minutes. The Greulich is in a neighborhood which was nice to experience, but far from the city center and the Old Town which makes it a little inconvenient for those with only a little time who want to sight-see. Breakfast and dinner were both very good.

Room Tip: We were in a Superior Room Double, # 1. I believe all rooms were on the ground floor and opened into...

I found this hotel to be relatively cheap compared to the other options in Zurich and looking at the location, decided to book it.
Quite easy to get to from the train station, just 5 stops on Bus 31 and a 5 minute walk then.
Check in was a breeze with the very pleasant lady who speaks very good english escorting me to the room as well.
The room size is big, and looks very clean and white. No air conditioning as its Switzerland but I felt I needed it in June. However, a small fan which more than serves the purpose.
The bathroom doesnt have a door, which is something I do not really like as it doesnt afford any privacy if sharing a room with someone, but I was alone so did not make me a difference. There was no cupboard, rather a curtain covering shelves in the wall that had a safe.
The radio was an awesome touch to the room and gave it the hip feel.
What I liked was that it was not like a typical hotel with floors and lots of rooms - here when you open your door you see a nice courtyard.
The turndown service was excellent as they gave a piece of chocolate as well!
At night, when I got to the room, there was a vacuum created so when I opened the door of the room, a light cover came crashing down - I immediately went to the reception and they came and saw it and said its okay no problem.
Checkout was a breeze and they stored my luggage for the day and gave me a bottle of water when I was heading out.

Nicely done hotel on the edge of Zurich's downtown. It has an understated laid-back design and attracts a bit of a hipper (but not young) crowed. The rooms are in a sort of bungalow style straight line, all on the ground floor. The cafe is pleasant and draws some non-guests on it's porch for a coffee/drink as well. There's even a bocci-ball court! The rooms are modern, white with nice design elements. The staff where super cool. Free internet and continental breakfast. Not sure how it is in the Winter when you have to walk out to get to the Lobby. Also, it's very near what is in Zurich considered a red-light district (very tame) but still maybe not the best option for Family travel. It's not a full-service large hotel but that's not always needed. Regardless, easy choice to stay here again!

Room Tip: Try to pick a lower number - just cause it's closer to the lobby and exit.
