It is hard to find cheap accomodation in Zurich. Hotel Rothaus is your perfect stay if you need a bed and a shower. It is really easy to get to and from thanks to Zürich's excelent public transportations. It is a couple of minutes away from the city center and the old town. The rooms are clean. The staff is really friendly and helpful. There is plenty of places nearby if you wan't to eat. The rooms do experince quite alot of noise from the neighbouring pubs during the night.

Hotel Rothaus was great for what we needed. We were only there for one night. The staff were very friendly, the hotel was clean, it had a great atmosphere.

I would only really recommend for younger travellers, as there a bar downstairs, (which we loved), it being in the red light district and just for the general feel. Nor for business travellers.

It was a little bit too far from the train station for us to walk, probably wouldnt have been so bad if it wasnt pouring rain, but otherwise it was an easy enough walk to the centre of town and to the water. Also very close to other public transport.

Our room was quite big, there isnt much to the rooms but it's not really the kind of hotel you go to if your going to spend all day in your hotel room, which hopefully isnt the case. The bathrooms were small but if your not fussy about that they are adequate.

But again the staff were great, the room more than affordable (for Switzerland).

Zurich is a breathtakingly expensive city and so a room at Hotel Rothaus seems to be a great deal. It is a good deal, with a couple of caveats.

First, the negative points: the rooms are small and the bathrooms are pretty old -- cracked tiles, wheezy fans, etc. Bring your own soaps/shampoos -- the ones provided by the hotel are awful. The rooms have safes but they are so small I'm not sure what beyond my passport and a wad of money I can really store in there! The hotel breakfast is weird and not worth it. I'm used to the usual bread and cheese Euro hotel breakfast but this one is so expensive and the difference between large and small breakfast so unclear that I would say skip it and go to the Happy Bakery around the corner on Dienerstr. for a coffee and fresh pastry for less than 10 CHF. Also as every other commenter has noted, this hotel is surrounded by prostitutes and drug dealers and it can be quite loud at night.

So what are the pluses? This hotel is very easy to reach from the main train station (you can walk for 15 minutes or take bus 31). It's probably one of the cheaper decent hotels in Zurich. The bar is actually a very pleasant place to gather in the evening, because the bartender does keep the drug dealers and prostitutes out and the bar itself has a nice ambiance. The Wi-Fi is not free but very very cheap and works really well. The bed was very comfortable and so despite the noise outside I slept really well. Also if you can get to grips with the gritty nature of the neighbourhood there are some decent bars and restaurants around.

I'd stay here again, but would be careful about recommending it to friends -- I'd only recommend it to ones who are willing to cut a few corners to save a few Francs.

A couple of nights here. Staff checked me in with classic Swiss efficiency. The room was super basic (very small and with some irritations like lighting being pretty much either on or off with no subtleties in between). No fridge, no kettle, etc. As a place to sleep, it's fine: clean, comfortable (although I found the bed quite hard that seems to be common in Europe), and reasonably priced for Zurich - which is of course a very expensive city. The location is good - it's in the red light district but I felt quite safe so don't let that put you off. I'd be happy to consider this place again especially if on my own.

It was clean, clinically and well located especially if you like being in the Red Light District with all the colourful characters. However, I would not recommend this for middle/upper aged conservative couples. Leave it to the youngsters.

Found Zurich to be very epxensive, but this hotel was less than 100CHF per night which was a nice change. Very, very basic - more like a hostel. 3 single beds in one room, small TV and that was that - no pictures on the wall and a window too high to look out of. Bathroom was a pod. Area not too bad - it is in the Red Light area, but didn't think was dangerous at all - quite a few good bars nearby. Only 10 minutes on the bus from the stadium - would be better hotels though
