This place is just so nice, and typical Zurich, it is called by everyone the Bloody Thumb rather than the Rheinfelder-Bierhus and it such a local place and famous for their liver and it was the best I have had in years, Delicious, and decently priced if you can say that in Zurich.

Considering how expensive Zurich is, this is one of the rare places you can find good Swiss food at a comparatively more reasonable price (around Fr 20 plus for a main).

The place is small and cosy and there is an English menu. We ordered veal in mushroom cream sauce with rosti and pork cordon bleu with pasta. I prefer the veal. The pork cordon bleu was good too but the pasta was so-so. The portions were huge and we had difficulty finishing our food.

Definitely a place to go if you are budget conscious and yet want to try some Swiss dishes!

We arrived Zurich late in the evening after 3 days of intensive hiking in the Jungfrau region. Even though we were both tired and hungry, we still wanted to find a restaurant where we would enjoy. It's was Friday night, everywhere was reasonably full but this place was packed both indoor and outdoor tables, with some people still waiting. An implication for good business :) After waiting for a few minutes, the curt-mannered madam waitress pointed us to an 8-person table which had 2 vacant spots in the middle. While we were a bit awkward to squeeze our way in, it turned out to be the most fun dinning experience we had in our trip! Our fellow diners (a local Swiss couple and 4 foreign students) were so helpful in cheering for my husband when he got a chair, getting us the English menu and recommending dishes. We had great conversations and enjoyed the lighthearted communal atmosphere very much.

Rheinfelder-Bierhaus, as informed by the local couple, is famous for their meat dishes, especially the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu (as others have reviewed), and infamous for their service (understandably as only 2 madam waitresses serving dozens of customers in the outdoor area). I had the traditional schnitzel (not dry nor greasy) with salad, and my husband had the pork hock (juicy and fatty!) which was to his satisfaction, and the "disapproval" wow's from our fellow diners (some of them had not seen pork with skin, let alone someone ate the skin) to his further delight (LOL). We returned for dinner the next evening. We had the schnitzel cordon bleu and pork chop with garlic butter sauce (as the very gentlemanly waiter recommended it would be better with my salad, the black pepper sauce is better with french fries). Good honest food, happy experience!

Most reasonably priced food we could find in Zurich, with the most reasonable authenticity (29 CHF for a continental breakfast at my hotel? No thank you!)

The waitresses are extremely nice and efficient (despite being quite busy as well). As many recommend here, the Cordon bleu is exceptional and will fill you up (has the highest fullness/money spent ratio) - you can split a jumbo Cordon bleu b/w 2 people

Having flown a red-eye from the US, having been awake for over 24 hours and having had nothing but airplane food for 18 hours, we wandered through the Altstadt in the late morning waiting until 11:00 when the restaurants would open. We had this place confused with the nearby Rheinfelder Bierhalle, so we stopped in, tired and hungry. We were the first lunch customers of the day (apparently it is open for breakfast as well), and the waiter/proprietor spoke less English than I do German (ein Bischen, aber nicht so viel), but we were able to communicate enough to get a good meal. I had the Zuri geschnetzels (veal and mushrooms in a light cream sauce with rosti) and my wife had the Rindfleisch mit pfeffersauce (beef tips in a dark, vinegary sauce served with spaetzel), and we both had whatever local bier was on tap. Everything was tasty and plentiful (the rosti was a bit salty, but otherwise good), and two meals plus beers was under 50 francs. Not the best restaurant in town, but plenty good enough.
