When you first approach the Lombok Lodge, you are aware that there is something different about it. After a moment, you realise that the roofline is far from traditional, and that there is a hint of the far east about it. This impression is reinforced once you get into the lounge, where you are greeted by a plethora of furniture and artworks imported directly from Lombok in Indonesia. The effect really works, because it is not a mix and match of styles, but a fully realised look and feel.
This is further enhanced once you see the rooms - beautifully decorated with wall hangings and furniture, all from Lombok.
The rooms themselves are very comfortable; we had the upper floor room at the end, so we had an uninterrupted view of the ocean, and could sit on the open balcony and watch the Humpbacks and Southern Right whales playing in the sea. You are not right on the coast; the Lodge is just off the main coast road, and you are up on a hill a few hundred yards from the beaches, but the views are lovely.
The heart of the Lodge are the owners, Jan and David - an exceptionally friendly couple, very interesting to talk to, and for whom nothing is too much trouble. The breakfasts are wonderful - fresh, tasty, and every day something a little different to titillate the taste buds. They take service to a whole new level, and many other B&B owners could learn a thing or two from them - their customers are the most important thing to them, and they clearly enjoy what they do.
Location wise - you are outside of Port Shepstone, which is a short drive away. The advantage is that it is relatively quiet and peaceful; the downside is that you have to drive if you want to go out to eat. However, you need to drive anyway - there are some beautiful beaches in the area, and you really should go and see them - the blue flag beach at Ramsgate is excellent. There are lots of places to eat in the area, and Jan and David will give you their recommendations - and they are good ones - you have to try The Cellar!
Thanks for your hospitality - really enjoyed our stay! Say hi to Smee for us! :-)
