I booked this hotel 2 days before we arrived, and it was the perfect Groningen experience! Despite being in the middle of downtown (and close to all the bars and restaurants Groningen is famous for), this hotel is a quiet oasis in an amazing 14th/15th century building. I was a little bit afraid the standard room would be small, but that was not the case at all. The room was in fact immaculate, with great beds, more than enough space and a great bathroom/shower (with separate toilet). The mini-bar was included in the price, which is something I have never seen before (and I stay in hotels all the time) and the WIFI connection worked very well. The views of the beautiful and quiet Prinsentuin gardens from our room complemented the great experience. Breakfast, high-tea (both in a former 14th century church!) and in-room dining were really good and the staff (including the owner himself) went to great lengths to accommodate us (even suggesting and trying to book a restaurant for one of the evenings). The hotel has valet parking, which makes life easy in a city with a lot of one-way streets. They also have bikes available. For anyone who want's to experience Groningen I truly recommend the Prinsenhof

Room Tip: All rooms are great, but try to get a room with a view on the beautiful 16th century gardens

With all the rave reviews about this Hotel- we booked for 2 nights in a Superier room at €uro 250 per night. We checked in and were escorted by the receptionist to our room (47).Everything was in order and we went to discover the city of Groningen. After a pleasant evening we returned to our room.We were awakened by footsteps in the neighbouring room which lasted for about an hour ( not the fault of the Hotel-just selfish Guests). Then a constant stream of screaming from students outside coming home from a night out, after which an hour of different cars blowing thier horns.
As you can imagine -a good nights sleep we did not have. The next morning we went for Breakfast (which was described as included in the brochure). The breakfast was very poor for a 4/5 star Hotel,Little choice and the bread and bread rolls were not refilled!!!! Very poor- , but previous reviews had also complained about this.
This was the straw that broke the camels back and we decided to cut out stay short. We went to the reception and told them of what a night we had had,and that we would be going home- at no time was a soulution offered of a different room and we had to pay €uro 17.50 p.p for the Breakfast!!!!!!.These are London prices-for which a full continental or English Breakfast can be had.Not the sparse Breakfast that we had had.
We departed and in the train we looked at our booking form- it descibed our room as having a view over the Gardens.....it has a view over rooftops and no garden can be seen !!! It also stated that the Breakfast was included......
I wrote an e-mail to the Hotel and was informed that The breakfast included was not valid anymore!!!! The complaints about the room : WE should have informed them about the noise ( the receptionist on checking out did say "that this was a student city...) So??
If we had wanted , we could have had another room......this was NOT offered to us when we complained. The e-mail points the finger at us.....WE are the client who has PAID for a SERVICE-not the other way round.
A few last points: the large comfortable bed : is a normal sized bed. The Large shower room :is a normal sized shower room. The stairs leading up to the bathroom are very steep and have no banisters-a falling hazard. All in all -very disappointing and i think that all the rave reviews has gone a little bit to the heads of this Hotel...A shame

Dear "Manopkip",

On behalf of De Prinsenhof I would once more like to express our regret over the apparent disappointment concerning your stay in our hotel. I plead guilty to the fact that the "rave reviews" you mention are somewhat addictive. But eventhough yours is the first explicitly negative review in the nine months since we opened, please be assured that by no means do we choose to ignore any negative comments. Especially less favourable feedback helps us to improve on our performance.

As I have tried to explain in previous (direct) correspondence, it is very difficult for any hotel to anticipate every problem. Screaming students outside or another guest's continuing footsteps on our wooden hotelroom floors can only be dealt with when reported to our reception staff, which did not happen until the following morning. You choose to describe this as "pointing the finger at [you]". I was merely trying to explain that sometimes we need cooperation from our guests to solve problems.

Your dissatisfaction over the breakfast that De Prinsenhof offers has served to review the way we present this meal, as I do not recognize the sparse variety you describe. That bread rolls were not refilled quickly enough is unfortunate, but seems incidental. We will be giving more attention to communicating the fact that all warm breakfast components are prepared to order and are therefore 'less visible'.

You state that your booking form indicated breakfast being included in the room rate. Any official booking form confirming that your breakfast is included in the room rate would have been honoured by De Prinsenhof. However, you have made your reservation through a third party website which explicitly states that our roomrate (which for the Deluxe room you had reserved was €229, not €250) did not include breakfast. Their confirmation (i.e. your booking form which is sent c.c. to the hotel) also explicitly states that breakfast was not included. To the best of my knowledge, there are no Prinsenhof brochures giving information on room rates: these are communicated on our website exclusively and, again, do not include breakfast.

Your remark about the missing garden view is indeed correct and as before I would like to apologize for this misrepresentation on our behalf. To put it into perspective: garden view is mentioned on the third party website as one of nineteen Deluxe room features and unfortunately happens to be the only feature that applies not to all, but to a number of these rooms. We have since had this feature removed. We would gladly have looked into the possibility of upgrading you to a Juniorsuite with Garden view for the second night of your stay as a compensation. However, your complaint of the missing view was never mentioned to our reception staff.

Our log states that on day two you have reported three complaints: outside noise, noise from a neighbouring room and the apparently insufficient size of our double beds (180x210cm). Upon the reception staff's question whether we could do anything to make your stay more satisfying, it was reported that you had already decided on an early departure. In view of the circumstances we have waived any late cancellation charges.

I have few illusions on a second chance for De Prinsenhof, but should you prove me wrong: the offer of a free upgrade to our quietest room with a Garden view still stands.

Yours sincerely,
Jacques Muller

Everything was perfect : the staff, the room, the restaurant, the location, etc. My dad and I were amazed by the quality of this hotel, and both thought that it was the best hotel we ever stayed in. I would recommend it to everybody !

The former studios of the local radio and television broadcast, in the old ages a monastery and later a palace of the princes of Orange-Nassau, now house a beautiful new and classy hotel. The hotel has 34 rooms. I stayed in room 36, the largest standard room, with lovely views of the garden, but all rooms have nice views and each room is different. The hotel is situated at the Martinikerkhof, behind the provincial hall and the Martinikerk and famous Martinitower. The service is good, they provide valet parking. The bathroom is modern and clean with a bath and a walk in rain shower. Good amenities too. The breakfast is great: no buffet but each course is served at the table. Great fruits, and by far the best scrambled eggs I ever had. In my view this is currently the best hotel in town.

Room Tip: As I said, Room 36 provides great value for money!

Groningen is nice, the Prinsenhof is superb! What a great atmosphere, nice rooms, not square, old beams and great comfort. The taste of interior designer, one of the owners,is very delicate. He must have spend hours too come to this result. It's not fancy, it's a unique design that makes everybody feel at home( so to speak).
Looking forward to visit Groningen soon!

Very pleasant stay in a very pleasant hotel with very pleasant rooms, an excellent restaurant and equally good brasserie. Hospitality without fuss in a quiet corner of the old city centre of Groningen.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms have the best views.
