“Beautiful hotel with a historical background”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2013

My husband and I came for a short stay. He arrived for work while I was a tourist around the town. Firstly the location of the hotel is wonderful, a quick 10 minutes walk to the city square and so it's much more quiet than being in the town centre. The hotel itself is magnificent, the structure and the restored architecture of the building with a touch of modern Art Deco made the hotel an art itself. No one room is the same and each is amazing! The staffs are wonderful and helpful, and totally love the free tour around the hotel. Only one let down is the key card for the room keeps giving error and a few trips back to the reception to get the key card working again. Definitely recommend art or historical lovers to stay here!

We stayed at the Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht for eight days and loved it. The staff are very friendly and the setting is magnificant. It was such a privilege to stay in this very special place. I had two concerns, which are relatively minor. The first was that the beds are quite firm. That didn't bother my husband, but I have arthritis and I found it a bit of a problem. It would not have put me off staying in this magical hotel though. The other disconcerting issue was that we were billed for breakfast every day, when we had breakfast on only two days. The staff quickly corrected the issue when I pointed it out, but I was surprised, given the level of staff attention to detail to that point.
Our room was quite spacious and so warm we had to turn the central heating down. It was also extremely clean.
I am happy to recommend this magnificant "hotel".

My wife and I decided to have a quick overnight holiday in Maastricht. Even though it is a short train ride from our home in Rotterdam, Maastricht inhabits a different and particularly pleasant part of the Dutch universe. For me, first and foremost, there is a bit of elevation, hills and ridges that are a sight for sore eyes living in the flat and below sea level terrain of South Holland. The Kruisherenhotel stands out in this singular city not only for its location but also for being built in a former church and monastic complex. They have managed to maintain the atmosphere and tranquility of its original use - no small feat - even in the lovely red bar where Ruinart by the glass was on offer. Our room, 214, was cozy and comfortable with one of the church's beautifully maintained stain glass windows next to the bed. When we checked in, the kind and helpful receptionist not only escorted us to our room but took time to tell us about the hotel, its history, as well as places we might like to visit in the city (including another ancient church, now a bookstore.)

The room was spacious and comfortable with a large bathroom equipped with rain shower. A small closet held minibar and safe. The bed was particularly comfortable. One note: no wifi in the room but there is ethernet at cost. Free wifi was available in the lobby - a pleasant place to sit and work. Perhaps the hotel can consider having coffee and tea making facilities in the room as well as a mini-bar that isn't sealed so that one can use the fridge but these are trivial points in comparison to the delights of this rare and unique hotel.

The hotel is well-located to visit the historic sites including the magnificent church of Sint Servaas. It is a small town: we walked to the area of Sint Pieter and were rewarded by the site of hillside covered in vines with a beautiful old stone church. We must return and soon.

Walking through the copper entrance into the "lobby" of this monastery hotel you need a couple of minutes to catch your breath. It's spectacular! Despite being 3 hours early for check in we were told that not only was our room ready, we had been upgraded! What a perfect way to start my birthday weekend trip! The receptionist was very friendly, helping us by pointing out points of interests in town, and plotting out the sights on a city map. Later in the day she also helped us secure a table at The Harbour Club restaurant, despite it being carnival weekend. The superior room we stayed in was splendid, with the original setting of the monastery mixed in with modern art. The lounge area was also very nice, with their glass wine cellar on display. Breakfast was mouthwatering and very tasty. Oh, and take a wander around the inner courtyard at nighttime, the light displays are magnificent! Why this is not a 5 star hotel, I don't know. We are coming back in the summer for sure!

During the Christmas break we decided on a one night excursion to the wonderful city of Maastricht. The choice of hotel was not hard as I had already read about the Kruisherenhotel project and how they transformed a church and abby into a unique hotel - and the pictures I had seen were attractive enough. The reality didn't disappoint. The setting is gorgeous, and so is the finishing and decoration. Upon arrival lunch at the amazing mezzanine was an experience in its own right, making even the less than smooth service of the newcomer waiter not matter. Rooms were nice, too, but what I thought was really the icing was the exceptionally friendly and efficient service. Just one thing, if you have such a beautiful wine bar, don't start the cleaning/closure when you still have guests even at 11 p.m..... But, overall, an excellent and refreshing experience don't miss it.

The hotel is only interesting from the architectural point of view.
Nevertheless I was not satisfied with the service. I was disappointed when the receptionist did a troublesome mistake while issuing my bill and either him or his chief didn't even try to apologize for my inconvenience.

With "clean" I am probably refering to the fact that some elements of the hotel lack character. There is no item at all where I can state that the hotel is not good. It's all there and the fact that hotel is build in an ex-church gives it a special flavor. But, except for that, this "just-another 5* hotel".

Dear Lialis,

Thank you for reviewing your stay at the Kruisherenhotel.

We have 60 different rooms some of these rooms are more outspoken then others. Which means that some of the rooms are decorated with a more historical atmosphere and others have a more modern touch.

Please let us know next time when you book!
