“Good site, unfriendly reception!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

Like other reviewers the paying extra for everything is annoying!
First impression was bad, most unfriendly receptionist we have met outside of France! No choice in pitch, no manoeuvring on dates then when we asked where to fill with water we had to pay! Don't they realise just add a euro a night on the pitch price and make water/showers free and we wouldn't be annoyed! No shop, bar, 6 amp electric is annoying, we tripped it twice and we were being careful!
The site is convenient for visiting the area, go to Edam not Volkandam, cheese market is interesting and Alkmaar is a pretty place.
Reception is not unhelpful just unfriendly - this was a common comment on the site.

First Rate Site.
The site is very well maintained and managed. The pitches are generous (Comfort pitch used), clean, and with some privacy.
The shower block is recent and well maintained. Hot showers are 50 Cents for 5 minutes of hot water.
The location is superb for walking or cycling into the town. which is well worth a visit for its history, museums, canal trip, and cheese market (Summer Fridays 10am).
Enjoy :)

Room Tip: Comfort pitches have own water and waste and are larger in plot size

My husband and I stayed here on our 57km bike ride. We like the idea of staying in a Trekkers hut and this hut had everything we needed (except matches to light the stove...).
Ups- Clean, close to Alkmaar and to the bike paths that lead into the city, 5 mins to the train station.

Downs- no matches in cabin and you can't get them at the desk or anywhere within walking distance. Not really close to a grocery. The noise level from the street is a bit much if you are staying in the huts.

Like all Dutch camping sites.... YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING! This is normal so be prepared. Showers are 50 cents and last 5mins, hot water is 20 cents to wash dishes and such. Be smart and heat your water at the hut on the stove once you have gotten matches and gotten it working.

Great for one or two nights and great price if you are in it for cheap.

Expensive in comparison to their sites we stayed at in The Netherlands and I'm not sure why it was so expensive as it had no special features, eg shop, bar, pool.
Everything costs extra, eg hot water for washing up, showers, Wifi access.
Custodian wasn't particularly welcoming.
Approx 30 minutes walk into main part of town.
Alkmaar itself is well worth a visit.

We were really happy in our Trekkers hut last July, it was basic but they fitted everything you need into a small space, we brought pans and sleeping bags, the only thing missing was a cool box or mini fridge. The hut had a nice dining table and 4 chairs, four really sturdy bunk beds built in, and a 2 ring gas cooker.
Outside was a picnic table and water tap a few feet away.
All the toilets and showers were kept spotlessly clean, and the site was pretty with lots of trees and greenery.
The staff didn't really speak English, but we managed fine.
The bus into the centre of Alkmaar stopped right outside (also to Bergen), so getting around was easy, it stopped right next to the train station and only a few minutes walk from the large supermarket Jumbo.

Room Tip: the Trekkers huts are a cheap way to travel and not sleep in a tent, but they book up really fast

This place looks great with trees & shrubs but, we would not go there again. The campground charges a premium to begin with & then is extremely petty, charging for every little item. Want to wash dishes? That will be 20 cents for a few minutes of hot water. After 5 days in the campground the hot water malfunctioned. When we asked for our 20 cents back, it was refused. 20 Cents? This is how odd these people are. Electricity is only 6 amps. Showers have some odd mechanism where, after 5 minutes you must wait another 3 minutes to turn the water back on. Stand there in the cold one time & you're done with this game. Our neighbor had 2 children to stand and shiver with until the strange 3 minute wait ended. There's also a strange, aggressive, 60 year old maintenance man who races around in a golf cart. Don't let your children run around because this character brushed me with his cart when he went screaming by one day. Internet access? That will be 5 Euros for a single computer for 24 hours, and it is a very restricted access so don't plan on using any movie streaming service because it is blocked by the campground. The playground equipment is old and worn with chunks of concrete lying around for your kids to fall on.
