“Gouda gouda experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

Wonderful day trip from Amsterdam on the intercity train. Cheese market is held only on Friday from 9:50 am to 12:30 pm on the Waagpleinin Square. Easy walk from train station in Alkmaar. Arrive by 9am to beat the tour groups for viewing space. Purchased samples of their wonderful gouda cheese to snack on the rest of our trip. No charge to observe the cheese market.

“Traditional Cheese Market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2013 via mobile

On the Friday's of summer time the market will have a demostration of how the cheese trade goes in the past. There is 2 presentations, so make sure you reach the place before they starts. But for most of the time, I prefer to walk around the bazaar stalls all around and look for trinkets and sample cheese. There are cafe and restaurant nearby, also an old church with a beautifully sounding organ. Makes a good half day trip!

“Alkmaar Cheese Market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

As our youngest son lives in the pretty City of Alkmaar we of course have been to the Cheese market on several occasions.
It is on every Friday morning in the summer months in the Town Square & although very touristy I think its worth seeing as its quite colorful.
The men are all dressed in Dutch costumes & have 4 different colors Red,green, blue & yellow.with big boater hats with colored ribbons to match.
They load the cheeses onto carts after selling & run in a very unusual way with the cheeses on the carts to load into vans for delivery.
Its quite good fun to watch & there is a market around the square for tasting the cheese & buying if you wish to.
There are also a lot of nice cafes & restaurants in the square where you can get coffee N cake as well..

“Funny tradition to watch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

It's interesting to see, but it tends to be over crowded, because they only put it up on Friday mornings. So if you want to properly see how the cheese market used to work in the old days, be early.

“Alkmaar cheese market”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2013

The ceremony that lasts 2 hours is a little bit boring. You will see people carrying cheese wheels around from one place to another. If you won't be there early enough, you won't be able to see anything beyond the crowds - but don't worry, after few minutes people will be bored, leave the scene and will clear the way.
