I stayed here with my partner in October 2012 to celebrate my birthday and meet up with my cousin who studies in Amsterdam. We were looking for somewhere cosy and special in a central location and came across Miauw Suites on TripAdvisor. We also looked at their own website which promises luxurious and modern accommodation, so we booked the White Suite via booking.com at €295 per night for four nights. A total of €1180 was not cheap but this was a special trip.
The Suites are in an old building on a corner in an 18th century canal house. We climbed the steep wooden stairs to our suite. Initial impressions were good and we had a lovely view of the Keizersgracht canal. You have to pay the full amount for your stay on arrival, which isn’t the usual practice in hotels and B&Bs, and then you’re left to your own devices.
However, this place is all about style over practicality. Miauw Suites isn’t a hotel. There’s no reception or concierge. No is breakfast provided, not even a welcome pack.
Unfortunately the flat above is rented out to a long-term tenant who works from home. And you’ll hear him stomping about on the wooden floors above at all times of the day and night. On most nights he went out at 11pm and would return in the early hours. One night he decided to play music so loud that my partner had to get out of bed at 3am and ask him to turn the volume down.
The wooden stairs are also noisy and you’ll hear every resident’s comings and goings. The main door to each suite is partially glazed in frosted glass. Unfortunately this is also the door that takes you directly into the bedroom. When someone turns the lights on the stairs, your bedroom is flooded with light. These lights aren’t on a timer so will stay on all night unless you get out of bed to turn them off, which we had to do every night – sometimes several times including in the early hours. As there are no curtains or blinds on the doors you’ll be woken several times each night.
If you do get any sleep you’re certain to woken by the refuse men emptying the bottle bank outside the building at 7am every morning.
We experienced four sleepless nights and were so tired by the end of our stay that we were struggling to stay awake in the early evening.
The ensuite wet-room has no natural light. The water pressure is low so the shower is very weak. Water goes everywhere even wetting the toilet paper. There’s a squeegee provided to try to dry the floor but it takes hours to dry.
In the kitchen, dining and lounge area you’ll find a mixture of old and tatty furniture that your granny would be proud to have owned. It’s not comfortable and an old CRT TV sits on the floor. The curtains don’t draw fully and the sash windows don’t close properly.
The kitchen is not adequately equipped to self-cater. There is a four-ring hob, kettle, microwave and coffee machine. However there is no oven or toaster so your cooking options are limited.
We complained to the owner Analik, and she met with us on the day of our departure. She offered us a stay in her cheaper Souterrain (basement) Suite as recompense, but we were expected to fund all the other components of another trip to Amsterdam. We declined her offer but after three weeks of emails she offered €145 (the price of their cheapest room) as a goodwill gesture, which we have accepted.
However I cannot recommend staying here. There are plenty of other options in Amsterdam, e.g. the five-star Pulitzer Hotel is nearby and is cheaper too!
