“OK hotel, but Amsterdam? Not for me”
Reviewed 13 December 2008

This was an OK hotel, we are a family of 4, the hotel room was clean and reasonably large, but it was bare - a table with some chairs would have been great. The bathroom was reasonable. The hotel was quite a distance out of the city and you had to catch a bus to get in and out. If you are travelling with your family, the location of the hotel is an advantage. After you have been walking around the city all day smelling the hash, it is very pleasent to go somewhere where the air is fresh.
Amsterdam is the sort of city you visit once and never visit again, it has very little to offer - you may think that all the best artists came from there and you can visit galleries and see this great art, unfortunately none of it is there. Hotel was OK, city was very disappointing.

I was moved to this hotel from Inner Hotel after some kind of "mistake" in the reservation. I was skeptical at first because Inner hotel was 2 star hotel and Blue square is 3 star hotel but they didn't charge me anything extra.
The hotel is indeed very nice, big rooms with nice furniture, lights and great shower. You can see that everything in the hotel is rather new and the breakfast served from 7-10.30 was excellent..
The staff was very helpful and they could answer all my questions regarding the city and transportation without hesitation.
I would definitely stay again in this hotel if I come to Amsterdam again.

  • Liked — The quality of the room for the money is excelent
  • Disliked — It is far from the centre of Amsterdam, but the tram lines are often and regular

As this is a brand new hotell We expected it to be realy fresch but even if it did not seem ready in many ways (signs whith directions on A4 sheets standing on the floor, no information about anything in the room etc.) it already seemed very old and worn (elevators had holes covered by tape, furniture is missing handles and knobbs etc.).
We had room 235 at the second floor facing the side of the hotell, the size was good and it was clean and pretty noicefree but the missing parts on the furniture gave a cheep impession. The room had a bath and if You like to shower make sure to get a room thithout the bath as it does not have a handheld shower.
Taking a shower i also noticed the electrical work i the bathroom not very proffesional looking to say the least (look at pictures) and it sure wasn't cleaned up there since the work was done.
Another odd electrical soulution was the light. The light by the waterheater and the bedlight was conected so You have to keep one lamp in the room lit if You want to use the bedlights and leave the bed to turn it off. STUPID! The bed by the way was good put the pillows were terrible! Big, high and hard like rock, coud not sleep more than half an hour on it whithout waking up whith a neckpain :-(
The front desk staf was very helpfull and nice and the distance to the city centre is no big problem as the tram is just outside the hotell. Just next to the hotell where's a weekend market, shopps, cafés and some restaurants.
Breakfast was okej but not more, a toaster for the bread could be nice and more variety would not hurt.
Overall the hotell is enough for a few days but not as good as expected by a brand new place.

This hotel is about a 20 min tram ride out of town and convenient to get to. There are also various bus routes, etc. but you will need to email the hotel for these. The front of the hotel can get noisy when tourist buses are there (trundling cases, engines, etc.). I was moved to a room at the back (ground floor windows do not open) which had a lovely view of a skip full of dirty rubbish bags. The furniture is dark and retro. The padded chairs seem to have been recycled from another hotel and are scruffy. The building seems like a recycled office block. There are no door numbers – just handwritten ones on sticky tape. There are gloss paint streaks every so often on the carpets. The rooms are clean and bearable but there are no instructions r.e. the phones, etc. All phones are blocked because of tour groups, so check at reception if you are a solo traveller. Plumbing can be very noisy. Overall, it is bearable.
The worst thing about this place is the breakfast. There is a limited selection of badly prepared food (stale muesli, cheese hard at the edges, bacon in a puddle, etc). The coffee machine blocks every so often. There seems to be no dining hall manager. There is no trolley to clear the tables so that each table cleared means a separate trip from the kitchen. For people who want to fix their own packed lunch the lack of supervision is a gift. We watched one family of 4 adults make a loaf of sandwiches plus umpteen packets of jam, biscuits and liver pate and they weren’t the only ones.
I was very surprised to find that this hotel was a Best Western.
Good reception staff but overall badly run, lack of attention to detail and un co-ordinated.

Lovely bed and shower-most important!. Very helpful staff. Close to trams and busses. A fair way from the train station. Good wholesome breakfast. We had a good big room, very quiet.
