“Design over comfort - admire your room, don't stay in it...”
Reviewed 5 July 2010

CitizenM likes you to travel light. Your room has a hanger for your coat and a small shelf for your toothbrush - and that's it. Too bad if you brought suitcases, went shopping or want to hang your clothes somewhere - the only place is the floor. No wardrobe. There's a drawer under your bed - but that contains spare bedlinen so now you have even more stuff to put on the floor. One guest hung a towel on some lights in desperation and burned half his room down.

Citizens, apparently, did not need privacy. The shower cublicle is transparent and the toilet opaque. Every move or noise you make will be heard by your roommate. How romantic!

The window cannot be opened - so you depend on the in-room climate control. We froze for two days and gasped for air on the third, when it wasn't working.

So grumbles only? Not quite, public areas are spiffing and staff was very friendly. The bed is excellent. I guess it's a great place for single travellers - or for people who have neither luggage nor bathroom inhibitions.

Hi citizen,

Please allow me to comment on your review..

citizenM travels light, and the room offers few hangers for your coat, jeans and a jacket. The full length mirror in one side has in the other, sockets (UK, US and European), a powerful hairdryer and enough space to put your toiletries. Unless your toothbrush is oversized, you can fit some other stuff in the glass shelf too.

The XL king-size bed is big as your dreams, and is covered with Frette linen, 2 fluffy pillows and an amazing duvet. The drawer under the bed has 2 extra pillows and an extra pair of towels at your service. Not travelling light? The drawer fits a big open suitcase or 2 closed small ones, you just need to take the 2 extra pillows from the drawer and put them on the bed.

Hung a towel on some lights in desperation? There are 2 hangers where the towels hang when you get to the room, why not put back on the hangers? Or in the floor if you wish them to be changed.

Trip Advisor reviewers awarded the citizenM room as the trendiest in the world. It is not the traditional, it was designed in a new way with only one thing in mind: mobile citizens comfort!

Feel free to write me in case you would like to know more about citizenM and the ideas behind our concept.

All the best,

went with a large group and perfect for our one night stay in Amsterdam, approx 10 - 15 minutes from the aiport - one train ride and then a 5 minute walk, straight outside the hotel the tram stops taking you into the city centre. Unfortunately one of our party was ill whilst we were out there, but the satff were very very helpful and couldnt do enough!. would definitely go back!

Technology starts as soon as you walk in the door with the diy computer screen check-in.

The room electrics, which are all operated by a single remote control pad, include mood lighting, blinds and TV. Its all very clever but the remote can be a bit slow to react and also does not last long unplugged from its charger.

You will have to be good chums to cope with the shower / toilet arrangements but then as you will be sharing the great bed one would hope you already are.

One good thing that I did not realise until I'd paid the bill is that international calls are peanuts which makes a pleasant change.

It is a trendy hotel but only for a few days, I think you would get fed up with the room layout if you stayed any longer.

The trendiest hotel in the world ??? I think the Hoxton in London does it better

We really enjoyed this hotel. It was very different from many of the other hotels we stayed at; very modern! The lobby and lounge area are great with free Internet, a great selection of books and a cool bar/cafeteria with well priced drinks and eats. The rooms were interesting. Cool to see, but lacked a bit in function. Pretty small and intimate for two... There will be no bathroom secrets between you and your bunkmate as the washrooms are very open. There is also no room for luggage. Upside is the amazing bed, free movies and novelty fun factor. I will also add that someting scuried through our room on our last night.... I am a realist and mice happen but it did freak me a bit. I noticed the next day that all the other doors on our floor had a thing blocking the bottom of their doors and since that was how our friend exited I would guess that if you have the door block thing you are safe! Overall it was a fun stay and I would still recommend!

Hi Hammy,

The different stay you had is what we want our citizens to experience. While there are so many hotels out there, citizenM is a new type of hotel for mobile citizens.

The mice issue was an exceptional case and, spite of being common in Amsterdam with most 17th century buildings, our property is new and serious measures were taken with pest control just after our notice. Apologies!
Small in size, we believe you shouldn’t pay more for the space you don’t need. The award winning room was designed to offer you all you need without sacrificing your comfort. As for the luggage, you can store a large samsonite bag, open, in the drawer under the bed (or 2 of them, closed).

Safe travels and hope to see you back in one of our citizenM properties.

All the best,
citizenDiego

If you like modern design and don't mind spending a few bucks to be surrounded by it, this is the place. The shower and toilet are encased in glass cylinders (shy people need not apply) in the main living space, which leaves the room a bit cramped. Everything else is ultramodern as well. Some of it didn't work so well, such as the 'moodpad' device for controlling the TV, lights, and blinds. A manual override for some of these functions would have helped. So would a desk. The hotel isn't very well situated for seeing the major sights in Amsterdam, being a relatively long tram ride out. But for the roughly $160/night we paid, it was a decent value relative to centrally located hotels with equivalent amenities, where $300 is the rule.

The hotel is like a dormitory-full of young people, small rooms but enough, energetic and different. It is a good choice to experience it for a short stay. For long stays, I guess it can be tiring. Amazing lobby and decoration. Rooms are original but there is no place to put your luggage and not enough hangers. There was a hair on the toilet so that was disgusting. Check in and out was much easier than I thought. Location is very convenient for train station and Schipol but it is far wawy from the city center. It is a must stay hotel if you are young and you are in Amsterdam for a short visit.

Hi citizen,

The definition of dormitory doesn't fit in our concept however I appreciate your comments. I apologize about the hair on the toilet as rooms must be completely clean.

Regarding the luggage, citizenM rooms does not offer a proper wardrobe but a huge drawer under the XL king-size bed fitting, open, one large samsonite or two of them closed. There are few hangers and place to put a coat, jacket and jeans.

The tram 5 in front of the hotel brings you to the center of the city in 10 minutes. Still, the area is surrounded with few options of nice local restaurants and shops, RAI convention center and World Trade Center.

All the best,
citizenDiego
