Description: Arriving by train? De Compagnon restaurant in the very heart of Amsterdam’s old city is five strolling minutes from Centraal Station – and it’s worth finding. Down a side alley, De Compagnon seats just 35 diners over three floors with windows and doors that open onto the water of Damrak. Small it may be, but the effect is light and airy, comfortable and cosy. Bert van Buschbach is in the kitchen, creating traditionally-styled French/Burgundian cuisine while Sara van Buschbach’s domain is the front of house and the superb and celebrated French wine list. Meeting facilities are terrific: a private room seating up to 12 and a wine cellar that can accommodate parties up to 20. Private dining here means your own waiter and chef too. Dishes include starter of salad of sautéed scallops crumbed in dried ceps, main course of whole fried guinea fowl with creamy truffle sauce and sliced fresh truffled (for two) and red fruit with curds and red fruit sorbet for dessert. Of the 300 wines, about 200 are listed at under euros 50, with a very nice selection of half bottles.

I went to this restaurant yesterday, took me awhile to get a reservation.
I was not disappointed however I think it is a bit expensive restaurant.
They have a very nice details like on the table as soon as we arrive we got lovely olives, home made butter, home bread, chorizo, oil and crystal salt.
They have a large menu of wines from all prices, the food was very nice with some amuses in between, (very tasty) and main course. Like I said it not a des appointment but it is expensive. Nice location as well.

Excellent French restaurant tucked away in a side street. Our hotel owners recommended the restaurant and we were not disappointed. Food was really good – well prepared with good service. Expensive but worth it, we paid Euros 130 for two including a bottle of wine. Young staff were extremely friendly. Overall very positive experience. Book in advance.

We are lucky enough to have eaten in many more restaurants in many more countries than we have reviewed on Trip Advisor, and De Compagnon is right up there with the very best. It isn't hard to review, as it's everything that a restaurant should be, offering very fresh food really well cooked by people who really care, with excellent service in a warm, friendly ambience. The wine list was excellent, right down to the Greek desert wine which we had never heard of but tried on a recommendation. It will never get a Michelin star, because it is too small (a maximum of about 45 covers) and too unpretentious, but should have one for the food.

Great food, unpretenious atmsphere. Menu is not huge but there is plenty to choose from. I had a four course pre-set menu, every course delicious. Wine lists (actually two of them) are a bit large but one can find things for every taste / budget.
