“First view of A'dam, but it gets better”
Reviewed 3 July 2013

When you depart the Centraal train station in Amsterdam this street is the first scene you see, and it positively screams at you. There are a couple of good restaurants, such as Ghandi Indian Restaurant, but for the most part the eateries here cater to a transcient crowd and have no incentive to be very good. The other businesses here are geared mainly toward young tourists traveling on a low budget. Keep walking away from the train station and soon things become calmer.

“Main street that connect Centraal Station and Dam Square”
Reviewed 7 June 2013

Lots of people especially tourists walking up and down this street and no wonder that there are numerous souvenir shops as well as restaurants and pubs charging expensive meals and drinks. If you avoid those, I think this street is good for people watching and pleasant to walk between Centraal Station and Dam Square. Careful with your belongings though, as it can be quite busy with people bumping onto you.

There are some shops selling fries with mayonaise which happens to be a Dutch snack, a portion for about Euro4 can easily satisfy two pax. Good to try if you are around here or whenever you see the fries kiosk.

I particularly love the dancing houses at Damrak especially at night!

“The worst Amsterdam has to offer”
Reviewed 30 May 2013

Tacky souvenir shops, questionable museums, poor restaurants. All on the Damrak is a tourist trap, and should be avoided at all costs, unless you are drunk, stoned or really, really want to be ripped off. Actually most of the passers-by on this rather crowded street tend to belong to one of these three categories, making the whole picture even more interesting. A few exceptions to the above are the fries at Manneken Pis (among the best in town) and of course De Bijenkorf, who just "happens" to be on the Damrak, since its main entrance is on the Dam.

“Not so bad”
Reviewed 25 May 2013

It might be because of the time of the year that we visited, but the street had a nice feel to it. It was clean and some shops were quite interesting. It is touristy, but all big cities have one or more streets like this.
