In the middle of Amsterdam you find Dam Square, home of the Royal Palace and most starting points of local tours. From the endless delivery of tourists by bus, to airport shuttles dropping off passengers, and mass transit delivering commuters, Dam Square is one of the most hectic of all public squares in Europe.
Add to that the constant construction efforts on almost every feeder road, the makes for some hectic times. It is best to visit this place when you have something else in mind and only cross Dam Square (to take a few pictures) on your way to your planned destination.
Amsterdam is a city that caters to a younger crowd given the cheap beer and the rather large red light district; therefore, the Square will stay crowded throughout the evening hours. Endless restaurants and bars ring the square but you will find the tourist prices on the menus.
