“Above and beyond: astounding service at the Grand”
Reviewed 24 May 2010

Our second stay at the Grand was scheduled for mid-April: we got a good deal by booking online and paying in full in advance for a no-cancellation stay. But then we had to cancel: the volcano in Iceland closed down all the airports. The reservation manager kindly allowed us to re-book with a very slight penalty. So that was nice, and we traveled in May.

This stay, however, we suffered the traveler's nightmare: one of our wallets was stolen the very first day we were out sightseeing. We returned to the hotel and told the concierge. Soon, the hotel's efficient security manager was in our room, quizzing us on the day's events. He sent one of his staff to accompany us to the nearby police station, where he helped us file a report. This wonderful young man then accompanied us back to the hotel where he and his front-desk colleagues helped us make all the interminable phone calls to cancel all the cards, traveler's checks, etc. The trauma was drained away. We happily accepted the offer of free drinks at the (very comfortable) bar. Our equanimity returned. Our trip was saved!

So here's another reason to stay at a fine hotel: in case of emergency, they will take care of you. Bravo to the Sofitel Grand in Amsterdam!

We wanted a canal view and were given one, in the section of the hotel facing the back. At around 6:00 the next morning, we were awakened by the garbage collection crew below our window. The next morning, customer relations staffer Zsa Zsa(pronounced T-sa T-sa) asked how our room was, and I asked how often the garbage was collected. "Daily," she said with a frown. "Was that a problem?" Told that it was, Zsa Zsa said she would look into it.
About an hour later, she had us upgraded to another room at no additional cost, and she sent us a complimentary bottle of wine for our trouble.
We were there during the Iceland volcano eruption and were able to keep our room beyond our check out date. The entire concierge staff was excellent, both in recommending restaurants and in trying to rebook our return flight, which was a challenging task at that time.
We would take a stroll to our pet breakfast spot, on the Rokin across from one of the places where you take a canal cruise, called Meuwese. Nothing special, but friendly, prompt, and a good bit less expensive than the hotel breakfast.
When we were there, the fitness center consisted of an elliptical and a treadmill. However, we were told a full-fledged spa was scheduled to open soon.
The hotel restaurant "Bridges" was quite good, but a bit fancier than what we would normally choose. Nevertheless an excellent rainy day choice.

We stayed here for only one night in the Easter weekend with three children. The service was excellent. Staff really went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The rooms were lovely decorated. The children were thrilled to find huge chocolate bunnies in their rooms. The restaurant was excellent. You need to book way ahead of time because it is often full.
Breakfast was a bit chaotic not enough staff to keep up with everybody.
We organized a small boat with captain from the hotel. A bit expensive but really worth seeing Amsterdam from a boat through the canals.
It is a lovely hotel. Nicely decorated and quiet location. Unfortunately they were renovating the spa area so we could not try out the swimming pool.

Great hotel, fabulous, courteous helpful staff and Guido the concierge among the best ever! Convenient central location, excellent restaurants. Beautiful building and rooms, immaculate, comfortable - Wow!! Only negative was that like most nicer European hotels, they expect you to eat a large and very expensive breakfast buffet. A la carte only available via room service. Great guest lounge on main floor with 2 complimentary computers (and free internet) for guest use was a nice plus.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your experience on Tripadvisor. Your feedback is very much appreciated and I will share them with the entire team.

Please be advised that we serve an extensive breakfast buffet in our restaurant, where you can also order à la carte warm dishes, such a variety of egg dishes, waffles and pancakes.

We hope to welcome you back in the near future!

The beds at The Grand are actually like sleeping on cloud. As a couple who sleep on a Tempurpedic in the US, this bed is ten times more comfortable. Incredible sleeping on this lovely feather bed with a feather duvet. The service is impeccable and I'm sure they would cheerfully scrape gum off the sole of my shoe had I asked. Every detail was attended to and the turn-down service included the most incredible chocolate truffles I've ever had! it's right on the canal and just a block from the boat tours, and the neighborhood where you can walk all day to see the lovely touristy shops or the high end shopping district. The Grand keeps taxis on hand for a ride at a moments notice. This place has a historic history and the breakfast buffet was delicious. We're American so they made lovely scrambled eggs from scratch and there were plenty of meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, and breads including those heavenly croissants. In case you can't tell this place ROCKS! It's well worth the price.

What more could you want? Seriously, the room was beautiful and the bathroom was fantastic. Loved wathcing the nesw soaking in the tub on a flat screen in the wall!
The concierge, Duncan Groot, the manager Zsa Zsa, and Dominick in the restaurant couldn't have been more helpful or nicer. Each day they helped me plan my sightseeing and couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. The service was excellent! I was in Amsterdam for 6 days and five nights. Room service was really delicious as was breakfast each morning. Bridges, the hotel restaurant is Amsterdam's newest hot spot. Stay here you'll be delighted! The location was perfect and the hotel ambience superb! Loved having the mac in the lobby to research and check my mail each afternoon.

This is definitely the best hotel I've stayed in in Amsterdam. We actually drove there from the UK, and the valet met us, and deposited our car in the garage - the parking was included in the price, so that was nice. The hotel was realyl plush, and you enter via a courtyard, so even if you walk past the hotel, you have no idea what it's like inside unless you go in.

Lovely room, with opulent decor, overlooking a lovely courtyard at the rear of the hotel. Filled with lovely vegetation, it was nice to not be looking over the street, and gave a real feel of privacy.

Great location, just moments from Dam Square, and the Red Light District. Not cheap, but so much nicer than staying anywhere else in the city!
