There is a rail link between Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and the city. The train leaves right from the lower level of the airport, and leaves you at the Centraal Station within 30 minutes (depending on whether the train makes stops, or runs express). Fare is about five Euros and change. You can purchase a ticket using a credit card at a kiosk or from an agent in the airport.

The station seems pretty efficient. There are a number of platforms, so check signs. Train to the airport leaves from platform 12. There are two information booths at the entrance to the station from the plaza out front. There are also street maps out front to help you find your destination in the city center. There are also a number of trams that stop right out front. You can purchase a card on board for transit.

There are restrooms up the escalator at platform 2, but be aware that it will take coins to use one - so plan accordingly!

Using the train is easy. Once you have your ticket, use it to open the electronic gate to get to train platforms.

Outside the station, it's a very short walk to the red light district, and a number of canal tour boats along Damrak. But be aware that if you want a smaller, open boat, you can walk over to the left, to the next canal - Oudezijds Voorburgwal, - where a number of smaller tour boats are ready to take you for a ride through the canals.

The train station is a good starting point to walk around the central part of the city - but be aware that it is crowded and close in the neighborhood close to the station.

Helpful station workers speak perfect English and are always ready to answer what must be boring repetitive questions by tourists who can't grasp how the public transport and trains work.

The Cuyperspassage is a 110 m. long bicycle and pedestrian tunnel at Amsterdam’s Central Station connecting front and back side of the train/bus station building without going through the new shopping arcade or crowdy corridors to the train platforms and the best connection by bike to the ferries behind the station building.

Dutch ceramics company Koninklijk Tichelaar created the 46,000 hand-painted Delft Blue wall tiles.

You can find the passage on the left side of the station building.

A good place to make a special selfie!
