“Nice building! Poor service!”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

Simply a beautiful hotel that lacks the will to serve or entertain its guests.

Ill talk about the service then the hotel itself.

I hate that I had to carry my luggage myself from the trunk of my cab and up the stairs of the hotel and leave it at the reception desk after check in. Luggage in 5* hotels should be picked up by the staff from the start. My friend also had a hard time checking in and arriving into the hotel as he had arrived earlier (we were staying together in one room but the room was under my name but his name nonetheless was listed during the online reservation process) and was almost refused entry to the hotel. Simply put, poor service!
The concierge there is also inexperienced to say the least. A guy called Peter who was very rude, unhelpful and dismissive made it extremely hard for me to give this review a 2 star instead of 1 for the way he handled my call and request. I decided to be generous and give it a 2 star instead of 1 because of a Yasmina who worked at the late night shift who was the only decent and consistent person at the hotel; whenever I see her she is helpful; every time I call in or ask for help; very courteous and professional. There are some more decent people in the hotel. The hotel staff seem to be divided into 2 categories; polite or useless. The chamber maids were very nice and the room service maids as well, always smiling and greeting, which turned out to be rare during this trip.

The in room breakfast tray was a disaster, cold food, dry eggs cold coffee it was unbearable.

The gym/spa was amazing. It is truly a must see. Situated in the basement, the staff at the gym were warm and friendly especially Peter.

This hotel has a well appointed interior and structure. It feels like it has some heritage but without being old and broken. It is fitted with technology (ie flat screen and wifi that works) and I haven't seen anything that was not working or in bad condition, as many IC hotels are notorious for being old and broken.

All in all and not to take things personally, I think it is an above average hotel.

Room Tip: MUST SEE THE SPA/GYM. Pack your bathing suit.

We stayed at Amstel for a weekend in early June of 2013. It was a perfect stay and most fortunately the weather was also perfect. The communication with the hotel before arrival was very helpful and they answered all our questions. The moment we turned into the street that the hotel is located, two hotel staff ran to help us with our luggage. The check-in process took less than 2 minutes and nevertheless we were very early they took us to our room. We were delighted that we were double upgraded to a Junior Suite with a river view. Fresh Fruit and bottled water were served. The bathroom was quite large and the water pressure was excellent. The room was extra clean. We had breakfast and had lunch in the terrace and I very much recommend the experience. The food quality for lunch was wonderful but for the breakfast could be improved (but I still very much recommend it). The spa facility was absolutely great. I also recommend the private tour using the hotel boat. It is a very elegant hotel. The service and politeness of the staff were absolutely perfect and flawless. The concierge was very helpful. The check-out process was very quick and the bill was accurate. While waiting for our taxi they served us coffee to say goodbye. The hotel accommodated us with all our requests and made our stay extra pleasant. I hope you will enjoy your stay there as much as we did.

Our stay at the Amstel Amsterdam was through our river cruise operator at the end of our trip. We had arranged for a independent car and driver to pick us up at the boat for a day trip to Brielle where my wife's grandfather grew up and emigrated in the late 1890s with a drop off at the Amstel. When the car failed to show, the tour operator sent us on their bus with other guests directly to the hotel. I queried the concierge if he could arrange for a car and driver to take us to Brielle. Within 15 minutes off we were for a truly memorable day. We owe so much to this caring gentleman.

This hotel has done an incredible job of integrating the grandeur of Old Europe with a modern flair. Their new bar appeals to the younger savvy travelers with a great mix of locals and upscale tourists. The staff is extremely friendly and the environment fun and funky. There is a great outdoor patio and the entire design is high energy and understated elegance. The bartenders put on a show well worth watching as they create some fabulous cocktails. Now on to the hotel itself. The staff are extremely Customer Centric from the moment you enter the luxurious lobby. The attention to detail can be felt at every touch point including check in, restaurants, maid service and as importantly the concierges are very knowledgeable and creative in providing unique opportunities to delve into local Amsterdam haunts! The rooms are well appointed with great bathrooms and lovely amenities. It definitely was one of my favorite homes away from home. The hotel was a great mix of business and leisure clients and located within walking distance of the best of Amsterdam with awesome canal views throughout the property. Indeed, the Amstel has done a great job of integrating the “best in class” of traditional and contemporary touches throughout this Amsterdam landmark.

We had a wonderful time at this old, grande dame hotel overlooking the Amstel River. The room was lovely, with a period decor and furnishings which comfortably welcomed us rather than being stiffly but uncomfortably beautiful as period decor sometimes can. Necessary modernization provided desired creature comforts without intruding on the period ambiance.

The fine dining lived up to its Michelin star rating; more casual dining was also excellent. The staff was excellent and attentive.

On first impressions, this hotel is grand. It is stately and sumptuous. You can see the excellence from the grand staircase in the lobby, individual check in desks, opulent decor right through to the rooms with as many towels as you need for a towel party, full size liquor bottles, antique style vases and large separate rain shower, toilet and bath. Needless to say the whole hotel is full of character.
However, taking a closer look away from the grandiose, this hotel is old, and at places looking rather tired. While the hotel has made attempts to modernise such as adding high tech TV , music systems, on the other hand the chipped furniture, old fixtures which don't work etc makes it look dated - particularly emphasised when a high tech TV is sat next to it. The Intercontinental has bags of character but doesn't quite feel like a well oiled machine.
And also, if you are a business traveller, I would point out that the desk is small and not the most laptop friendly (plug sockets not convenient, no table lamp - i stayed in the superior room).
I do need to add that the service and attention to detail of the staff are excellent - worth paying extra for but not the hefty price tag which the hotel demands. Great to look at, but not 100% for usability and meeting the expectations I had for a 5*.
Overall, I was left satisfied but not blown away.
