“What a lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

My family and I stayed at the Intercontinental for the first 3 days of July 2013. The rooms are good size and airy--especially those with a canal view (well worth any extra cost). the views are just terrific. The service staff is friendly, responsive and knowledgeable. The location is perfect. 5 Stars and worth every one of them. The food service, especially breakfast, is well presented and wholesome

Room Tip: Please make sure to request a room with a canal view. You will not regret it.

We stayed in this hotel for three nights during June 2013. The hotel has a lovely facade and is in a wonderful location with our room overlooking the Amstel River. Tram stops are close by. The view from our room was fascinating, with boats going by, and I would strongly recommend booking a river view room. Internally the hotel is beautifully laid out and spacious and very tastefully decorated. Similarly our room was large and well laid out, with the facilities one would expect including functional espresso machine and wide screen TV with about 130 channels. King size bed with high quality cotton bedding. The bathroom was excellent with a particularly good shower that had both overhead and hand held nozzles, and dial-up hot water temperature. Unlike so many hotels, there was no water all over the floor after each shower. The Health Centre was excellent with very good staff and I indulged in long massages each day. The Concierge Desk was excellent and gave unstinting assistance with booking concerts and excursions. A highlight of our stay was breakfast aboard the hotel's own boat as part of a canal tour, with just ourselves and the captain. This is not to be missed. The bars and restaurants were all that would be expected. One of the best hotels we have stayed in.

Room Tip: River view, upper floors

The hotel itself was superb, service was first class and location on the river unbeatable. We had a 1 bedroom suite which was spacious, light and airy - a great way to spend a long weekend. Why not 5 stars? Because when we arrived we were told there was no room despite having all our confirmation emails. They had overbooked the hotel (with barbara streisland and her entourage). As a solution, we were booked a room in the crowne plaza about 2 miles away (but without all the facilities we had booked for!). Not really a great start to our break and not really acceptable. The duty manager did her best to sort it out and eventually booked us into the hotel de l'europe which was just as good. But it took a lot of shouting!! Still, lets assume that was a 1 off - the hotel is great!

We stayed two nights at the Intercontinental and although it is very expensive, we found it to be a wonderful treat after a rambling trip through multiple cities and hotels. The hotel is located on an outer ring canal and a 15-20 minute walk to some of the more central areas and a slightly shorter walk to the Heineken Experience and the museums. It is southeast of the busy Central train station and was a short taxi ride of 10 minutes through the city.
The room and bathroom were large and the beds were very comfortable. Our view looked out over the canal and we had 3 large windows in our triple room. We found the staff to be helpful and friendly.

We checked in to the Amstel intercontinental only to find out that our booking had been cancelled the day before , the reason was the card put forward had been declined but there was no effort on the part of the hotel to get another card number from us or to advise us that they were cancelling the booking , lucky for us they had enough rooms that we could still check in , the room sevice on the first night was slow but they improved on the second night , at the bar down stairs on two different occasions , one in the after noon and once in the evening we ordered drinks from the barman and they completely forgot that we ordered drinks , the bar man seem more interested in chatting to each rathet than servicing thier cutomers . Not the standard of service one would expect from a hotel of this calibure . Beautiful hotel with magnificent views and rooms but let down by poor staff and lack of service !!!

The check in is as one might expect from a hotel of this calibre - friendly and courteous - as are the staff in general but apart from the undoubted grandeur of the rooms they need some serious maintenance. One just does not expect curtains that are falling off their runners, pictures stuck to the wall lopsidedly, an electrical system that is beyond comprehension, window stays that just do not work, a peep hole in the door that requires you to be two metres tall to look through it, a bathroom door handle that fell off and an entertainment system that cannot be switched on. These problems should be sorted out, as in its present state this hotel is far from its star rating.

Spring 2013 trip and enjoyed the beautiful river views from the room as well as the restaurants and bar. Great roomy suite and close to the action at Rembrandt Square as well as the parks. Walkable location. Pricey but worth it!
