“This is the Target of Amsterdam”

If you're a fan of Target in the US, this is the closest equivalent I've been able to find in Europe. They have a great variety of things to buy at reasonable prices. It's a great place to pick up missed items for your trip but also if you want to get some fun bike accessories, holiday decorations or stationary you can get it all here.

“Great for Housewares and Toiletries!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2011

Love this store, it is like a Dutch Ikea but without the furniture and with clothes. The best buys are the really cool housewares (tableware, dish cloths, tablecloths, bathroom items); very design-oriented at good prices. The clothing is lame, pretty poor quality and not cheap. The exception is the underwear; they had a good selection (women and kids, don't know about men), cute styles and decent prices. The one on Nieuwendijk is bigger than the one on Kalverstraat and has a cafe on the upper floor and a bigger grocery selection. We had hot dogs at the one on Kalverstraat and they were cheap and pretty tasty! Wish there was a HEMA near me! Clean bathrooms for a small fee.

“Love this Store”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2010

This is my very favorite store in Amsterdam!! It has everything from shampoo to clothing to THE MOST delicious sausage ever, to a full delicious bakery that cannot be beat. The prices here, in my opinion, are the best to be found. The stuff is basic, not designer, not cheap, but good enough. Need mascara, here is the place to go without paying 20 euro for it. Lost hairbrush? Get one here for 3 euro. Need to bring a special dessert to your dinner party this evening . . . you have to check out the bakery .... the best Limbuurgese Vlaii around, and they will package it properly too. From pens and papers to housewares, it is all here. Just don't forget to bring your own shopping bag, but if you forget one, don't worry, you can buy that here too.

“Take a big empty suitcase to fill with Hema goodies”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2006

How frustrating - we only chanced upon Hema in the last half-hour of our stay in Amsterdam, before we had to go and catch a plane. It's a fabulous low cost, high design department store, kind of like Habitat meets Woolworths. Household stuff, toys, clothes, accessories, bedding, food... I'm very excited that we'll be driving to the Netherlands seaside for our summer hols so we plan to take the top-box empty and bring it back full. I just need to find the nearest branch of Hema....
