Not the first urban beach I've been to, but definitely the best. I suppose if you take an urban beach and prefix it with "ganja-friendly", you've just made it the best urban beach in the world. The beach is man-made and not very large. You can lay out comfortably if you come during the hottest part of summer. Although some people went in the water, even in our mellow state it didn't seem like a good idea due to the skeeve-factor. There are some fire pits, but you have to supply your own fuel--most people use any old garbage they find. They also apparently have music shows and other special events, but we unfortunately didn't get a chance to see any of that.

But, seriously, who cares? Get mellow and lay out. When you're hungry and/or want a beer, walk into the decently-sized restaurant and sit inside at a table or at the bar or outside at a table so you can water-gaze. The shrimp, OMG, the shrimp, the shrimp, the shrimp, OMG, the shrimp. Get the shrimp. They also have some loungy outdoor seating facing the beach for you to lay back and drink (and it's protected from rain with awnings), but you might not get table service there.

Mostly locals come to this place because it is a bit out of the way for tourists that want to hang out downtown, but if you do feel like doing something different, head to Centraal and grab the 26 tram towards IJburg and get off at IJburg Zuid (it's about a 20-minute ride). From there, it's a short and pleasant 10-minute walk to the beach. Be mindful of the timing for the return trip, because I don't think the trams run super late and it is a LONG walk back to downtown.

Blijburg is unique. Whenever I have taken friends from overseas here they are amazed. It has an atmosphere that is unique in The Netherlands. It is relaxed, friendly, some would say alternative. You will only find places like this in Goa or Thailand. Blijburg is a collection of containers, recycled materials, tents, pavilions all built on a beach that was purpose built for this venue. It is one of the best places to go in summer if you are in Amsterdam. Most weekends there is live music, and in the evenings a large fire on the beach. This place attracts people from ALL walks of life as well as lots of families because the swimming is very safe. Food is reasonably good but the drinks are overpriced. Don't worry, you will have one of the most entertaining days just people watching and talking to the locals.
