“Great staff - poor value for money”
Reviewed 25 May 2014

Hi

When reviewing a hotel I believe its all a function of value for money. Basically if I paid 50 euro for a 5 star hotel, I would be left with nothing to complain about, no matter what happened, as it reflects the price paid. On the other hand if I pay 1000 euro a night, the slightest infraction would earn the hotel a bad review, as it would not be what I expect from a top notch hotel.

Hilton Amsterdam is a decent hotel, which is located in a quite upscale part of Amsterdam.
Its an impressive building which aside from the hotel serves many functions, as in ballrooms and restaurants etc.

They advertise the hotel as a 5 star hotel, which in my opinion is highly overrated.

The staff are truly excellent and the lobby though it isn't opulent in any way it still can fit with its 5 star description.
However this is were the buck stops!

The rooms leave a lot to be desired of. Its very apparent that the décor has not changed in quite some time. although there is plenty of wood in the décor, giving it a better class look, still the rooms are a bit dreary, and in no way luxurious. Also the size of the room is not very impressive at all, although it cannot be considered tiny. You feel that the room is just missing some "pomp" to bring it up to standard for its class of hotel.

The amenities offered in the hotel are quite few, and for most of them you will have to pay. although there is no swimming pool, There is a well equipped gym adjacent to the premises, which is directly accessible from the hotel. However you will have to pay to enter the gym ( I believe that certain tiers of the Hilton honors program get It free)!
My opinion is that any paid for amenity such as the gym (as a pose to services like room service, which it is accepted that it should be paid for), can not be considered as part of the rating that the hotel deserves.

I also found that the room although it was clean, it was quite dusty, as if it needed a good dusting by housekeeping.

I rate the hotel a decent 4 star rather then a 5 star hotel.

The exorbitant costs for a room or any of it services, can in my opinion not be considered in any way as value for money.

I certainly would not return to this hotel at its current prices, although I still consider it a very decent hotel, and had it been cheaper it would be a viable option.

Having stayed in many fine establishments around the world, I was quite disappointed with this hotel, and my personal verdict stays as "not so fast again".

Room Tip: Higher floors with a canal view

This is truly a business travellers hotel and for us is not in the best location in Amsterdam if you need to get to the city center; taxi round trip will cost about $90 USD. The staff couldn't have been nicer and many thanks to Paul who checked us in for his recommendations were second to none. The room was our introduction to US style accommodations after spending 2.5 weeks in European style rooms, and frankly we missed the European style rooms minus the badey. The other draw back to this location is that you are almost forced to eat on site which is very expensive, but when the weather is bad and you have to walk 10-15 minutes in the rain, well it was worth the cost.

Room Tip: Room 619 has a great canal & city view.

Stayed here on a romantic trip. Our room was large, clean with everything included. A pleasant outlook over tree lined avenue with a lovely walk to Dam Square. I would recommend a stay here at any time.

Room Tip: Any room would suit as very clean and spacious just what you would expect from the Hilton Chain...

Very much a 60's style hotel in architecture but modernised and upgraded. Rooms are quite small but functional. The club lounge on the roof is a nice escape for cocktails or breakfast - although the menu has never changed in 3 years. The Italian restaurant is highly rated and very good. Food in the bar is also very good. Attached health club is excellent, and there is a park (Vongel) very close where you can run/walk/bike.

Neighbourhood is very chic with nice houses and cute restaurants.

Easy walk to business district at World Trade Centre or the station there.

Service is very professional and efficient - staff are nice and friendly.

Prices are high - but this is Amsterdam

Stayed here when on business in Amsterdam. The room was quite large and very nice. Although a King bed consists of 2 smaller beds pushed together. The location was nice, as well. It was a very pretty walk through the adorable streets and homes to get to the convention center. Would definitely stay here again.

CK in - smooth and professional - Arrived 10:00am; room not ready but they checked us in and gave us several options on nearby stores, restaurants. We decided to stay put at the hotel lounge and was given a couple of complimentary coupons.
Check out - Went smooth and all was in order.
Room – spacious and comfortable.
Bed - very comfortable.
Bath – Steamy hot water and great water pressure.
Lounge – Very comfortable and the staff was wonderful. A special shout out to Khalil and Laura for their outstanding customer service, they went out of their way to anticipate our needs. (We hope you enjoyed the tulips)
Most visitors seemed to be business and conference attendees.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice - we had a canal view room but truth is we were not in there long enough to enjoy...

Just back from Amsterdam! Hilton was great! Very friendly for pets! With really nice patio with the canal view, you can take a boat ride right from this place. Very nice bar on the first floor. What a surprise was when I found Hillinger's wine in mini bar! You have to taste it - Small Hill! Austrian product- really good. Staff is absolutely welcome!
Close to the park, shopping street & Van Gogh museum. Huge parking is a plus for Amsterdam.

Dear Kelly,

Thank you for your fantastic review of Hilton Amsterdam

It is great to hear to you had such a pleasant stay with us. The theatre view from the Garden Terrace over the marina and garden is one of our most beautiful views. Did you know that, if the weather permits it, we also have a special River Dining experience right at the canal?
I hope we can welcome you soon again and show you what more the city of Amsterdam has to offer.
