“Great location, but lacked attention to detail”
Reviewed 13 March 2011

Hotel was in a very good location, you almost don't need to use the tram if your staying here, most things are in walking distance. The reception and housekeeping staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was ok, but could do with a refit, shabby decor and fittings, especially in the shower room. Noise wasn't an issue as im use to city centre living. There are some great mini supermarkets and cafes near by which we went to for breakfast so would reccommend going to these- a lot cheaper than the breakfast in the hotel.

I spent a lot of time trying to find a hotel with a central location, bathtub and a buffet breakfast as this were the kids requirements for the trip. As Amsterdam hotels are very expensive we also tried to find hotel for less than 200 euro pr night including breakfast and and extra bed for children, and this was not easy. However we got a de luxe room at NH Carlton for this price at the net, and the room was large (36 sq m), with a huge bed, huge bathroom with spa bath and separate shower and fantastic view. The decor was quite dull, but it was clean, and a worked great for a family. The kids loved the breakfast, but I thought the bacon was a bit cold and the cheese somewhat dry for a 4 star hotels breakfast. The location is fantastic with walking distance to all sites in Amsterdam. The smaller rooms looked a bit small, so I am not sure if I would recommend them (just looked inside when passing by), but the de luxe rooms are great for families.

It was our first trip to Amsterdam and the hotel was perfect for seeing the City by foot. Our room overlooked the Pathe cinema and Rembrandt square provided bars and restaurants on our doorstep. Staff were friendly and our room was cleaned everyday.

After spending a long time going through all the terrible reviews of hotels in Amsterdam (check they are actually hotels and not hostels as some are shared bathrooms) we chose the Carlton - on arrival the receptionist was a bit scatter brained, didnt seem to know what she was doing then told us the hotel was overbooked......but we would be upgraded to a superior suite. Which was great but it could have easily have went the other way, downgraded or moved to another hotel. Shows a lack of organisation.
The rooms were spotless, very comfortable, beds were massive! The bathroom was spacious and towels cleaned whenever you needed them, great shower although we didnt have hot water at one point later on at night on one occassion. Rooms cleaned every day but were never disturbed by maids. There was hardly any street noise which was unexpected as our room looked right onto a main road.
Theres trains from the airport to Dam station every few mins and you can buy your tickets at the ticket machines (which generally say no cash or coins and only accept card) or theres ticket desks - cost around 7Euro and takes around 15 mins. The hotels about a half hour walk from the station or you can get a taxi from right outside for 10-15Euro.
Dam square is a 20-30 minute walk away depending how quick you walk, theres plenty of trams and taxis around aswell. We walked everywhere in the whole time we were there which was fine as theres plenty of scenery and things of interest to stop you getting bored! There's lots of small take aways close by to the hotel aswell and great restraunts, quieter than the ones nearer Dam square.
Amsterdam is a great place to be, the atmosphere is buzzing everywhere you go and theres plenty to do and see - Madam Tussauds and Anne Franks house were definitely the highlights. Definitely take a boat ride along the canals - costs around 15Euro and you can buy the tickets from most little newsagents or tour shops and the boats depart from infront of central station.

Decor can only be described as dull. Our room looked on to a main road which was extremely noisy until six in the morning. Our bathroom was overheated with no air vents or windows. The bathroom fittings were hilarious - a bidet which couldnt be used unless you were a contortionist and the taps on the basins soaked you everytime! We paid 12 euros for a basic pizza on the night we arrived not realising how many fantastic restaurants were nearby! On the up side its location was fantastic and the reception staff were helpful and friendly.

Hotel in great spot, walking distance to everything. Room was great, however, it was loud. I don't know what it was but every car that drove by the hotel was heard in my room all night. Maybe the fun in Amsterdam got to me but I was unable to sleep at all. Great hotel otherwise.
