While strategically placed in a central location just above the Flower Market, the Nh Carlton ultimately was a disappointed and certainly nowhere near the value I paid (200 euro prior to taxes, including breakfast).

First impression, the lobby. Very staid, not welcoming - definitely not a place I would like to lounge about and socialize. Very small and stuffy - rather dark and not appealing.

Secondly, the room. I was sent to NH Carlton because the hotel at which I had a confirmed booking - the NH Barbizon overbooked and sent me to the Carlton. While inconvenient after a long day of traveling, the Barbizon did try to find alternate accommodations and paid for cab fare. Now back to the room....Very spacious - too much space for one person, but oddly laid out. Tons of open space in a living area (albeit with a great view of the flower market below), older furnishing and fixtures that had seen much better days and were dirty, worn, scuffed and not appealing. Bed was adequately comfortable, bathroom was shabby, carpet worn and dirty.

Breakfast was basic - various baked goods, spreads, waffles and cold eggs and bacon. In a strange, rather hidden location in a bizarre Victorian ball room with brightly painted chandeliers. I had a feeling as if I was invited to the white rabbit's table for tea a la Alice in Wonderland.

There are plenty of other accommodation options throughout Amsterdam that are more pleasant and worth the money spent....Would definitely bypass the Carlton.

I am a frequent traveller to Amsterdam and have stayed in numerous hotels in the city but the Carlton is by far my favourite as the location is excellent! I Right beside the Flower Market & within walking distance to most of the attractions. There is also a tram stop a 2min walk away if you prefer.
Rembrantplein is 5 mins walk and great for nightlife & restaurants if you don't want to venture too far of an evening.
Check in has always been very easy ( I have stayed here on 3 occasions now) The staff are always polite and helpful and nothing is a problem for them. On my last visit (March) I asked could I have a room with a balcony and was accommodated without fuss as one was available.
Rooms are a decent size, which is quite unusual in a lot of hotels due to the architecture. It was also very clean and beds made / towels changed daily.
There is a mini bar, which as with most hotels is quite pricey - 4 Euro for a bottle of water! so don't use it but other than that no complaints.
For those of you who cant live without the internet there is Wi-Fi, however this can be very slow.
If you are booking though just choose a standard room - there isn't much difference to a superior except the price!

I have recommended this hotel many times and will continue to do so. It's also excellent value for money!

Just returned from a city break with Fiancé having stayed at the NH Carlton. While the hotel itself is OK, the price of the room is really because of it's very central location with everything within a 20 minute it seemed. The rooms themselves feel very corporate and in need of refurbishment, however the bed was extremely comfortable and our view was very good.
The hotel does provide safes for guests to use and are happy to look after your bags once you've checked out as well. If using the shuttle service to get back to the airport I would recommend getting an earlier one as we were not told by staff that they can be anywhere between 15 minutes earlier to 15 minutes late in the pick up time until we'd returned to get our bags. If our flight had not been delayed this could have caused us to miss it.

The Nh Carlton is situated in a great location right next to the flower market close to the city centre. The Royal palace is a 15min walk through the main shopping area of Amsterdam. Checking in for us was a little more difficult than it could of been. The entire lobby was packed with what seemed like some sort of tour group which made the whole process difficult. We had to bustle our way through the crowd to que for check in. The check in process took about 30mins. It seemed that there was always some sort of large group occupying the lobby area which made it difficult to transit in and out of the hotel. The staff did seem quite helpful and competent but I think where overwhelmed at some stages. The rooms themselves were clean but could use an update on decor. Our in room telephone did not work so if we wanted to contact staff it meant another trip to the lobby to wrestle with the crowds for service. In room wifi was free but was ridiculously slow and unusable in most cases. Seemed to work in the Lobby a lot better at times. Check out meant dealing with another crowd and it took about 40mins. Our stay was not terrible but there are definitely things that could of been better. If you can get this place at a good rate and can handle some hiccups it may be worth it for the location.

We have just returned from 3 nights at this hotel. Overall we were very impressed. The staff were polite and helpful. The safe in our room didn't work on arrival but within a hour or so of reporting this to reception it had been replaced with a new one. We stayed on the 7th floor and were very lucky to have a beautiful balcony with great views of the city. The room was clean - I agree with other reviews that it could do with little bit of modernisation. The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring the city by foot. We didn't eat at the hotel but had a drink one evening and the barman couldn't have been more accommodating - he even set us up a table so we could sit outside. Our only suggestion would be that it would be nice if the bar opened later into the evening - it closes every day at 10pm. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.

The NH Carlton suited us very well. It is well situated: we could walk most places we wished to go, and public transport was readily available to go further afield. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the breakfast we had included in our package was delicious. It seemed to us to represent good value for money. We are happy to recommend this hotel for people visiting Amsterdam.

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights. The room was comfortable and clean. Any staff we had dealings with were helpful and polite. The staff in the restaurant were particularly nice and helpful and the breakfast selection was fab! The hotel is in a good location for both walking to certain areas and the trams were always nearby if you had walked too much! The only one thing that let it down for us was the en-suite, which although was cleaned daily, there were cracks in the sink and a scum mark round the bath. That said, we would stay here again.
