“3 Star Hotel-Could be so much more if they remodeled”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

We stayed at this hotel in June of this year when we traveled with Globus. There were several other groups staying there when we were there.

This place seriously needs an update everywhere. Hallways are so dark, carpet filthy, chairs in our room all stained, stairways absolutely filthy. After our room was made up, it still seemed as though no one even vacuumed. Elevators took forever especially as one was closed. Sign stated that it was being worked on however, this sign must have been there now for months as no one is working on it.

One especially annoying thing was a young male breakfast attendant. He tried to push all of the Globus groups into 2 tables in one room. I told him that all of the tables were occupied and we needed to sit elsewhere. Keep in mind, the room was huge and there were plenty of empty tables. He continued to make a fuss but I wasn't having any of it. We paid for breakfast too and should be allowed to sit where we wanted.

This hotel does have a good location next to the flower market, and our room had huge windows in which to look out. Unfortunately while we were there, garbage workers were on strike and there was garbage all over the streets. I would find another hotel in Amsterdam if I ever return.

Stayed in this hotel early July 2014. Paid an extra 25Euro per night to have an early check in!
Room was on the top floor and had minor refurbishment but bathroom very small and quite smelly. Elevators also were quite unreliable with only 2 out of the 3 in working order. Location is excellent, but definetly not 4 star as advertised and priced! Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet very good but was a bit of a mission to find exactly where the breakfast room was!

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms facing the main thoroughfare, especially the lower floors.

I stayed at the NH Carlton for three nights in late July and greatly enjoyed my stay in Amsterdam.
Maybe the best thing about this hotel is its location: you are in the middle of everything, close to sights, trams, restaurants and shopping. The hotel itself claims to be a 4-star hotel which I don't quite agree with; my room was spacious and nice but the bathroom wasn't that clean and the air con seemed to be stuck in one position. And not enough value for your money. For a 4-star hotel, I would expect more.
However, the staff (the people at the reception and the waiters in the breakfast restaurant) were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet is great! And I felt welcome and safe in the hotel.
So, I would definitely stay there again.

Don't expect to be blown away by this hotel. In my opinion it's not a 4star. My overall experience was ok because it's a great location next to the flower market and easy access to the main shopping area. The room was however dated and so was the bathroom(you can't fit two people easily in the bathroom. Staff were pretty good but not enough on reception so both check in and out took ages. Breakfast was ok, good selection of cheese and nice waffles. I probably wouldn't go back but think that other hotels would be worse. Not great value for money.

While strategically placed in a central location just above the Flower Market, the Nh Carlton ultimately was a disappointed and certainly nowhere near the value I paid (200 euro prior to taxes, including breakfast).

First impression, the lobby. Very staid, not welcoming - definitely not a place I would like to lounge about and socialize. Very small and stuffy - rather dark and not appealing.

Secondly, the room. I was sent to NH Carlton because the hotel at which I had a confirmed booking - the NH Barbizon overbooked and sent me to the Carlton. While inconvenient after a long day of traveling, the Barbizon did try to find alternate accommodations and paid for cab fare. Now back to the room....Very spacious - too much space for one person, but oddly laid out. Tons of open space in a living area (albeit with a great view of the flower market below), older furnishing and fixtures that had seen much better days and were dirty, worn, scuffed and not appealing. Bed was adequately comfortable, bathroom was shabby, carpet worn and dirty.

Breakfast was basic - various baked goods, spreads, waffles and cold eggs and bacon. In a strange, rather hidden location in a bizarre Victorian ball room with brightly painted chandeliers. I had a feeling as if I was invited to the white rabbit's table for tea a la Alice in Wonderland.

There are plenty of other accommodation options throughout Amsterdam that are more pleasant and worth the money spent....Would definitely bypass the Carlton.

I am a frequent traveller to Amsterdam and have stayed in numerous hotels in the city but the Carlton is by far my favourite as the location is excellent! I Right beside the Flower Market & within walking distance to most of the attractions. There is also a tram stop a 2min walk away if you prefer.
Rembrantplein is 5 mins walk and great for nightlife & restaurants if you don't want to venture too far of an evening.
Check in has always been very easy ( I have stayed here on 3 occasions now) The staff are always polite and helpful and nothing is a problem for them. On my last visit (March) I asked could I have a room with a balcony and was accommodated without fuss as one was available.
Rooms are a decent size, which is quite unusual in a lot of hotels due to the architecture. It was also very clean and beds made / towels changed daily.
There is a mini bar, which as with most hotels is quite pricey - 4 Euro for a bottle of water! so don't use it but other than that no complaints.
For those of you who cant live without the internet there is Wi-Fi, however this can be very slow.
If you are booking though just choose a standard room - there isn't much difference to a superior except the price!

I have recommended this hotel many times and will continue to do so. It's also excellent value for money!

Just returned from a city break with Fiancé having stayed at the NH Carlton. While the hotel itself is OK, the price of the room is really because of it's very central location with everything within a 20 minute it seemed. The rooms themselves feel very corporate and in need of refurbishment, however the bed was extremely comfortable and our view was very good.
The hotel does provide safes for guests to use and are happy to look after your bags once you've checked out as well. If using the shuttle service to get back to the airport I would recommend getting an earlier one as we were not told by staff that they can be anywhere between 15 minutes earlier to 15 minutes late in the pick up time until we'd returned to get our bags. If our flight had not been delayed this could have caused us to miss it.
