“Past it's heyday, but pretty clean and spacious. Good service.”
Reviewed 21 March 2011

We stayed in one of the superior suites facing De Oude Kerk. The window is directly above the entrance, first from the left in the photo. While this particular room was very spacious, I also saw one of the regular rooms, and it was tiny: this is definitely something to keep in mind when making your reservation. Our room was clean except for the two chairs with impressive stains. The rest of the furniture was clean and well kept. There were also a couple of cigarette burns on the side of the bath tub. Bathroom is nothing special, but adequate. We definitely didn't like the wall-mounted hand soap dispensers. Sheets and towels were spotless.

Staff performance was immaculate for the most part. For some reason the room service didn't replace the shampoo bottles once we ran out, so I had to ask for more at the front desk. Other than that, no problems whatsoever.

Overall I'd say this hotel may be past it's heyday, but our room was pretty clean and spacious, and the service was good. We wouldn't mind coming back.

Die Port van Cleve Amsterdam has plenty of character and is very well located, a few minutes from Centraal station and close to Dam Square. The hotel bedrooms are roomy and perfectly acceptable as a base for a lads trip, and the breakfast was unremarkable. Being the original home of the Heineken brewery, the bar is commensurately very pleasant indeed. With a better option across the street (the Sofitel Convent Hotel) and the American Hotel off Liedesplein, I wouldn't select Die Port van Cleve for a business or a romantic trip.

Visited this hotel as a birthday trip for my husband. Booked it through Thomas Cook and because it was so reasonable I decided to pay for an upgrade. Well on arrival at the hotel we were dealt with by a very efficient male receptionist and given directions to our room, he even helped us book a trip on the canals it was night trip which served cheese and wine, trip was not that cheap and we only got 3-4 cheeses and a couple of glasses of wine - so beware.

Now getting to our room, although it was clean we had to climb down what I would call stairs that were very very steep and very narrow which left us glad that our cases were not any bigger., also if there was to be fire we would not have stood a chance . I would comment that the room was quiet but not by any stretch of my imagination would I have called the room an upgrade!! Beer was at least 1 Euro than pubs outside so it was worth going a walk. There is also a cracking little supermarket just to the left which we did not discover until quite late in out break. Breakfast was dear but is worth shopping around, also there are loads of eateries scattered about most of them very reasonable.

My girlfriend and I visited Amsterdam for a 3 night stay in early March.
This hotel was chosen using the 'Tripadvisor' feedback gleaned from other traveller's.
The suggested 'excellent location' was the hotel's main selling point ... it lived up to all our expectations ... and more!!
We pre-booked a 'return' mini-bus transfer from Schiphol airport which was VERY reasonably priced (20.50 Euros).
Check-in was pretty straight forward ... but be prepared to pay a 100 Euros deposit to cover any additional charges.
The reception staff are VERY helpful and equally informed to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
If you pre-order your buffet style breakfast (12.50 Euros) this will save money (19.00 Euros if not pre-ordered!!)
I could list endless sights and tourist attractions ... this hotel is ideally situated for them all (either walking; or catching a tram or bus from the door-step! Public transport is extremely cost effective.)
There was an amount of hotel refurbishment on-going; but the 'work' did not start until after 8.00 am.
We upgraded to an executive room (308 ) ... which was lovely.
We did not eat an evening meal in the hotel and so cannot comment on this aspect of the hotel.
Our return flight was on the Saturday evening ... we checked out of our room and left our luggage securely locked away in a cupboard for collection later.
The reception staff were very helpful and confirmed the 'pick-up' time of our return journey to the airport.

When we return to this wonderful city we will most definitely try to stay at this hotel!!

Stayed there for 3 nights and I did enjoy the Hotel. It is very well located, just by Dam Square and side-by-side with a shopping center. The building is very nice, well preserved and the staff was very polite and friendly.
Breakfast was as hoped, I mean, it is standard but good.
The rooms are not that good, because they are a little bit old, very small and not very well maintained. It was good soundproofing and kind of comfortable, but are, clearly, the weak spot of the Hotel.
Nevertheless, I don’t mind going back again.

We arrived from the states and were greeted very kindly by the hotel staff. Having read all the reviews, we were not expecting much, but chose the location by well, locatiion, and price. And for that, this place is worth it. On the other hand, there were cigarette butt stains all over the tub which made me feel as though I was in a crack house, only without any crack! (:

A bit of street noise but that was to be expected. Some of our mates stayed in the Hotels near by and they were infinitely worse than the Van Cleve because at least the Van Cleve is fairly clean and has very large rooms,.

Because of the great bartender Faisal, the heineken bar becane the focal point and meeting place of 20 plus people in our party staying nearby. However, when we went to the bar when Faisal wasn't there opn Tuesday, March 14 we had to wait and beg for service from a cold and tall blond woman who ignored us and was rude for literally 45 minutes before we could get a beer.

Having said all that, the bar is beautiful,DO NOT MISS IT, make siure Faisal is your bartender, ask for the room without the nasty cigarette stains all over the bathroom (401 was ours) and you will have a wonderful stay at the Die port van cleve. Otherwise, it's a mixed bag!
