“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2009

This is such a great hotel in an excellent location! After reading some great reviews about this hotel I booked it for our euro vacation and was so pleased!!! I took the advice of one reviewer who suggested contacting the hotel and asking for a room with a canal view or street view and I am so glad I did because we were given a room with an incredible panoramic view of the street and outside water fountain and it was so nice!!! Its in a heavily touristic area which is so perfect because tram #5 is literally outside of the hotel and EVERYTHING is within walking distance. I loved every second of amsterdam because we were situated perfectly and the hotel lived up to its standards. The only little incident we had was at breakfast one morning where we went to get some eggs and the eggs were so over cooked we couldnt eat them. The Maitre D promptly had the eggs replenished and did not charge us for breakfast that morning. I'm sorry, but thats good service if you ask me. And nobody gave us a hard time about it for 1 second! :) I will definitely come back to this hotel! You will be so pleased with its location and pretty decent sized room & bathroom for a european hotel! FYI - they have wifi for a fee and its not worth ordering room service with so much to choose from walking distance from the hotel.

My boyfriend and I just returned from spending five nights in this hotel. The location is convenient. But, the room was extremely small. The walls needed a paint touch up. The room definitely would not merit 5 stars at home in the USA. Maybe 3 stars. The front desk was nice and helpful. They let us check in at 9am. Downside, there was no news on the tv in English. No CNN international. Covers on the king bed were strange. 2 twin quilts. Paid wi-fi only. Nice hot water in showers. Room had hair dryer but no bath robes as advertised. Close to the museums.

We were very pleased with everything about this hotel...the staff, the room, the view over the canal, the location, the design & decor.
After a long trip, it was the perfect place for our introduction to this great city and we look forward to the day we can stay here again.

My family and I attempted to stay at the Amsterdam American Hotel in November 2008, having chosen the hotel due to its location at the Leidesplein and proximity to the Rijksmuseum.

We prepaid for two rooms to get the discounted rate, made special arrangements for early morning arrival (our flight from Africa arrived at Schiphol at 06:00), and reconfirmed our early arrival by email two days before. Yet when we arrived, our rooms were unavailable. We were told that even though we had PREPAID and were PROMISED early arrival, the hotel was booked and NO ROOM would be available until 15:00 at the earliest. Even though the hotel FAILED to provide rooms as promised, the front desk staff REFUSED to refund our money. We asked to speak with a manager and none was in the hotel. We were forced to go across the square and stay at a Marriott.

What's worse is that when we returned to our home in California, we disputed the prepaid room charges with our credit card company. The hotel fought the back-charge for six months and FABRICATED completely UNTRUE statements - notably, an assistant named Annemarie made the FALSE statement that we were offered a "more luxurious" room and that it was our choice to cancel our reservation.

I do not recommend this hotel, and as a matter of principle, would not consider staying at any Eden City Hotels hotel due to this unconscionable treatment. To date, the hotel still has not refunded nearly $500 for prepaid rooms that it never made available to us.

Arriving at the American we were impressed with the facade. Prompt checking in a boring lobby for such a great building was a bit of a let-down. Arrived at room 134 and were disappointed by the small size of the room. The stained glass window was very impressive though. Bathroom was small but fine. The 'customer comment' card was filled in and left there from the 15th of April, this was now the 18th. We were there until the 21st and the card was never removed/replaced.
The bar staff weren't particularly friendly and our kir royales were not cold at all, our wine later wasn't particularly cold either. The location is good for the Leidseplein and all its 'attractions', and the outside terrace and it's staff were very good. Overall it wasn't a bad experience but next time we will rather stay at the more impressive and professional Krasnapolsky or the Doelen which were both unfortunately fully booked on this occassion.

Just spent 3 nights in Amsterdam at the American Hotel. My husband and I had one room- our two children 20 and 22 had another. Can't say enough nice things about the hotel. Lots of character, the dining room is beautiful. Rooms are large for a European hotel - ours had beautiful stained glass windows. The location is great - we were able to walk everywhere and lots to do for the kids at night after us old folks turned in. Yes, you may hear the tram at night or some of the lively activity outside, but it was worth it to be in one of the best parts of the city right on a canal and in a busy square. Breakfast came with our room fee - a wonderful buffet each morning with a chef ready to fry eggs or make us an omelet or waffle. The hotel is has all modern amenities, but retains the charm and elegance of a 100+ year old facility. I would definitely stay here again. Not cheap, but what hotel in a city is these days? Breakfast included helped - otherwise would have been 19.50 euros each, so it made a difference. We just stayed in three nice hotels in Europe and this one was the best.

We were booked into another hotel in the city but when they could not accommodate us we were transferred to the American. We found it very easily as it is right in the square and has some unmissable fountains outside. The location was great as shops, cafe's and bars were all really close. Also there is a canal cruise departing from right outside. We were treated very well on arrival. The staff were polite and helpful. The rooms were lovely and spacious with huge beds, although the views from our windows weren't great. We had a wonderful stay in Amsterdam thanks to this great hotel!
