“Worth it for the location”
Reviewed 29 June 2012

We travelled in June to Amsterdam with our friends (also a couple in their 30s) and stayed at BW Dam Square Inn.

Since we were celebrating our 3 years' wedding anniversary we received an upgrade from a standard room to Bootz Suite - situated at the 2nd floor of the hotel.
The suite is wonderful - very spacious - large bathroom (shower and bath tub + 2 sinks), 2 rooms - one with a double bed and one with an extensible couch, inner stairs (from the entrance door to the rooms).
Room was comfortable (especially the bed!), cleanliness was not so OK - towels not changed on a daily basis, bath tub and shower cabin kind of old and rusty.
Also, our friends (who got a standard room) were not so lucky - standard rooms are very small and crowded, also cleanliness not so good, and bathroom also old and rusty.
But considering that is a 3 stars hotel, it was OK.

Breakfast was OK for a 3 stars (they could have used some fresh vegetables - at least some tomatoes and cucumbers). Breakfast consists of: cereals (various kinds), milk, juice, coffee, tea, 3-4 sorts of ham, 1 sort of cheese, a few pastries, butter, jam, youghurt (simple and with fruits), boiled eggs and different kinds of bread (rolls etc.).

Check in and check out went smoothly and quickly.

Now for the amazing stuff: location is fantastic - 1 min from Dam Square, still neighbourhood - indeed close to a few coffeeshops, but it's ok!

Considering the prices of hotels in Amsterdam let's say that the deal we got was ok (4 nights in June = 604 EUR) - plus we were upgraded to Bootz suite!

If you are on a budget, I would definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Try to ask for an upgrade to Bootz suite - if you get it, then all your money you are paying are ind...

We had booked a triple room here (friends traveling together) but got upgraded to the Bootz Suite on arrival. We LOVED the suite and couldn't have been happier. It was very large, with one end of the wing containing a couch that folded out into a double/queen, and the other end of the suite had two single beds pushed together toform the double. Although there was no door separating the wings, privacy was sufficient. Each end had its own flat screen tv. Windows on one end overlooked the cobblestone alley below. Bathroom was large and modern. The best part about this hotel is that it's off the Damrak and all the tourist traps and junk stores, but it's still in the heart of everything. It's in a cute cobblestoned alley with coffee shops below and the fabulous hotspot Cafe Belgique is only a 30-second walk away. The breakfast here is fine, nothing memorable or special, just standard continental fare. It's expensive to stay here, but for the location and our large suite, we thought it was worth it.

We stayed here for four nights prior to a river cruise.
The hotel was on a pedestrian street right behind the New Cathedral. Everything was at close walking distance, by everything I mean historic sites, a big grocery store and a wine store, a pizza place right across the street where the owner added a piccolo of prosecco to my bag, and upscale restaurants and pubs.
The breakfast room was pleasant and service was fast and friendly. All the people at the check in desk were helpful, both in advice, ordering taxis, and dealing with check in / out.
The one downside was that our great windows overlooking the street became a negative at 1:00 a.m. When everyone was heading home from the pubs. Ask for an interior atrium room, as this would be quieter. Our room was large with a huge bathroom so maybe this was the balance to the noise from the window.
I would stay here again!

We stayed here for one night prior to departing on a river cruise. Check-in was fast and we had 2 rooms on the first floor. The rooms were very spacious, clean and tidy; with a nice bathroom and the beds were nice and soft, pillows were also soft....great. The "Full Breakfast" is actually a "Continental Breakfast"; but there were lots of choises including cold meats and hard boiled eggs.
The location is right on the back of Dam Square, a 1 minute walk and it is all there for you to explore!
We would recommend this hotel for either Business or pleasure; great little base for sightseeing.

After a long trip from Paris we were alll but had it and really needed just to relax for a while , and we had hoped that this hotel would give us that break , unfortunatly this was not to be the case as the rooms were very small to say the least ( we thought the room in Paris was small ) Ah well I thought this is europe and this is what you get .
The location was quite good with all the major attractions only a short walk away and even to get to the hotel to begin with from the central train station was easy as it took only 15 minutes to make the walk there .
This however was were the fun ended , after a quick and effecient check in we found that our room was not as discribed on thier web site and that the rooms were very small indeed to the point that I thought that someone was having a lend of us , we were on the top floor basicaly in the roof cavity so that meant the room had inward sloping walls which in turn made the room even smaller than it accually was , the bathroom wasn't much better even though it was almost the same size as the bedroom it's self , the shower had the most difficult and cumbersome tap system that I had ever seen and took me quite a while to work out and even when I did get to work properly it was very much a hit or miss affair as to wether it would work or not ( quite offten a cold or luke warm shower was the result ) dispite complaints to the front desk nothing was done and the managment claimed that nothing was wrong with the hot water .
Another glaring fault and one I had never seen in a modern hotel before especialy a Best Western was the fact that there was no refrigerator in the room at all in fact the room had looked like it had a recent renovation which hadn't been completed to the point there was a unfinished power outlet that had the wires just poked down the hole in the wall where it was to be .
Another point was that the walls seemed to be made of rice paper as we could hear people talking in thier rooms several doors down and no they weren't raising thier voices , just talking normaly .
The bed it's self was lumpy in the extreme and gave both of us a restless nights of sleep and a bad backs in the morning , breakfast was a joke with just bread and a few cold cuts with a bowl of cereal ( cold milk ) was all that was on offer plus the coffee can only be discibed as sump oil , truely discusting .
The hotel staff were however very helpfull and as I have said earlyier the location is good but this hotel does fall well below what I would expect from a Best Western Hotel and we would not use it again ( so says my back ) .

Nothing special about this hotel, quite pokey rooms, but great location. literally steps from the main square, cafes, bars etc, although no noise inside despite the proximity.
Easy walk to the station, shops and centre for taking tours. Helpful staff.
The breakfast was quite good, lots of choice, and included in the price which was quite good as well.
If you're looking for somewhere very central and functional this is fine.

We stayed at the Best Western Dam Square Inn for 5 nights. Everything we wanted to see was really in walking distance. We took some Viator tours and the departure location is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is fairly close to the train station or you can get shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.

The staff was really great and very helpful giving us the information that we asked for as to locations of places we wanted to go.

They gave us a Suite when we checked in, don't know why because I didn't book one,but it was very spacious and much appreciated. The suite has a good size refrigerator, room safe and plenty of towels but no wash cloths, so bring your own wash cloths, and don't forget your electrical plug converters. The bath has a tub and a separate shower along with the soap, shampoo, etc. The room had nice carpet, a large king size bed, with two extra pillows in the cabinet, a flat screen TV with a few English channels, but we spent very little time watching TV as we were out most of the time. The hotel also has free WIFI or a computer in the lobby if you don't bring your laptop.

The buffet breakfast is very adequate with cereals, yogurts, cold cuts and cheeses, breads, fruits, and hard boiled eggs. You can also get either coffee or hot chocolate. The buffet is a good deal because most of he hotels don't offer a breakfast buffet for free and as a couple, you would probably spend $15 to 20 dollars a day just for breakfast.

Amsterdam is a very busy place with lots of tourist and activities. You will enjoy Amsterdam and I would definitely recommend the Dam Square Inn for your hotel to be in the action. There are lots of restaurants and shops close to the hotel as well.
