“Unbeatable location for central Amsterdam, rooms quite small”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2014

Stayed 2 nights at this centrally located in Amsterdam for a city getaway. The location is ideal, just across from the Amsterdam Centraal train station. With Dam Square and RLD only a short walk away. We flew into Schiphol, so getting from the Airport to the Hotel was fast. The rooms were small, but decorated warmly. The bathroom was even smaller.

Guest services were very friendly and helpful. Check in and check out was efficient and we were able to store luggage after check out before continuing our journey. Despite the location, the place felt safe. Doors were locked during the night and a roomkey was required to access the hotel.

Room Tip: high floor, it can be noisy, as it's right at the heartbeat of Amsterdam

This is one of the places you'll either love or hate, depending on what you are looking for.
Forget it if you're searching for luxury or pampering.Don't even think of it if you're used to signature or boutique hotels. This place is not for you.
We've been in Amsterdam to attend a concert in Concertgebouw, on December 19th, and decided to stay for a few days before our goal.
Well... it's a FANTASTIC spot if you're arriving from the airport or from other cities in Europe,- it's a 15 minutes from Schiphol International Airport by train, and Amsterdam Centraal is the arriving and departing trains from everywhere.
ALL trams stop there, which means you can reach all Amsterdam from there.
No need to worry - the hotel is in front of Centraal-at the opposite side of the street, mere 150 meters far.
It's a great place for exploring "touristic" Amsterdam, which begins on both sides of the hotel.
A VERY friendly and competent staff is there for you- on our arrival there was an internet breakdown in Amsterdam for a few hours, and the staff has located our booking and provided us accomodation with manual check-in, even though the keys were only available when the system was on again, which took a couple of hours.
The room - at least on the traditional wing - needs some shopping.
Worn out carpet, with stains on some places, may give you the false sensation it's dirty. It's not: it's just in time for replacement, like the furniture, which looks like a 70's furniture. It's not bad: it's just...in need of retirement.
The room is DARK! Period.
This is not an unusual condition in many, many hotels around the world, but this one is particularly dark, with very weak illumination, even with all lamps on. I'm used to it, and use a torch to inspect the room, which was immaculately clean.
Comfortable matress with very decent, clean and odorless pillows and brand new bedsheet is a good sign of care and attention.
A spacious, comfortable and equally clean bathroom, with a powerful shower and a big bathtube, with the usual shampoo-conditioner-soap equipment with a very good quality completes the overview.
Elevators in great shape, free wifi all around and a good quality restaurant-bar another good surprise. Common areas are well decorated, with care, not quality, and precisely because of that, it has a warm welcoming sensation. Nearby areas are safe, clean and busy, even late at night, so, calm down. It's a very, very good hotel, unless if you're a big spender.
"Oh, but it's close to Central Station, it's noisy, it's..." NO, IT ISN'T! The rooms are quiet and quite comfortable.

Again: do not hesitate in booking this hotel during your stay in Amsterdam and do NOT consider some comments about the Red Light District being nearby the hotel -it is near all right, but not THAT close to it as some fake puritans are writing down. You will have to walk some minutes to get there, like some many famous attractions in Amsterdam Central.
A must stay!

Room Tip: Ask for the price of an upgrade- superior rooms are bigger and more comfortable When booking, ask f...

Dear Schwartzkopf_Reiser,

Thank you for your extensive and detailed review. It gives me great pleasure to read that you had a delightful time with us.

Some key points that stood out from your review were: “a FANTASTIC spot, great place for exploring "touristic" Amsterdam, A VERY friendly and competent staff”.

Unfortunately there was an Internet failure in Amsterdam upon your arrival, but I am happy to read that you were provided accommodation. ‘Technology is nice, when it works’.

The rooms in the Victoria-wing reflect the history of the hotel, as the building itself dates from 1890! Thank you for noticing and especially mentioning that the somewhat old-fashioned furniture and carpet are clean and that it could give the false sensation it is dirty. Our team members from the Housekeeping department do their utmost to make your stay a clean and healthy one.

Regarding the silence in the room, did you know that the Victoria was one of the first hotels in The Netherlands that offered double glazed windows?

We would much appreciate it if you would follow us online. Might you have made nice pictures during your stay, please do not hesitate to share them with us and other travelers.

I have nothing bad to say about this hotel. Staff were very friendly and the room was modern and spacious. I would like to return to this beautiful city some day and would stay at this hotel again. Access to all trams nearby and the train station.

A classic hotel with charm. We had a room on the old side with big beautiful rooms. The hotel also has a new part with modern style room.
As a hotel guest you have free access to the gym, sauna and pool.
The location is perfect if you arrive with train from the airport. It is opposite the station. You do not need a taxi. The pedestrian area with all shopping starts behind the hotel.
The breakfast was a bit boring but otherwise a hotel I can recommend.

Dear Juhani T,

I am pleased to read your review and that you recommend our hotel.

The Victoria was built in 1890 and is in fact a National Monument! We offer 2 different concepts, namely the Victoria-wing (which reflects the history of the hotel) and the Urban-wing (modern styled).

It would take you approximately the same amount of time to reach the hotel by train or by taxi. The difference though is in the price. A train ride is much less expensive.

For your next visit the a-la-carte menu may suit more to your needs.

Def a once upon a time 4 star hotel.....
In need of tlc
The bathroom sink was kept together with silicone
The wifi was something out of the late Nineties
The reception PC had a connection so slow it took the best part of half an hour to Log on, access my email, click on the link, check in online and print the slip
Something that normally takes 4-5 minutes
Reception staff super slow on check in
Super super slow on check out
Breakfast was nothing spectacular running out of most things
A bottle of water from the mini bar E: 6.50
The pool was very cold to the point we dipped in and jumped out
Had an amazing dinner one night, so nice that we returned to the brasserie the following night to have exactly the same meal.....
WTH?!!
Completely different from the night before!!
Carpaccio from the night before which had been amazing suddenly turned up with sliced asparagus on top of it as well!
I hate asparagus.....
The chicken Caesar salad from the night before suddenly became 'spicy' chicken Caesar ...
My Guinea Fowl suddenly changed appearance as did the dessert, poached pear and ice cream
When we pointed this out the waitress kindly did not charge us for the 2 beers
But only after she had spoken to the 'chef'...
Apparently the asparagus had been added 'free of charge' as a decoration.....?!!??~!
If decoration it was, well it should not have been smothered on to my carpaccio,,,,
As for the spicy chicken, well apparently the 'chef' that day had decided to 'marinate' all the chicken in spices and chilli....??!!?#!
But we were 'reassured' that that wouldn't happen 'tomorrow'.....
4 stars?
Nope sorry, more like 2 & 1/2 stars.
I expected more from a '4' star Park plaza....
especially for £200 a night.....

Dear TheItalianTopDog,

It is highly regrettable that you experienced your second evening in our Brasserie like this, especially because your first visit was up to standards.

We have also received your feedback via our guest questionnaire, which gives us extra insight about what exactly happened. The situation has been discussed with our Executive Chef and Food & Beverage Manager. Also on behalf of them I send you our deepest apologies.

Please note that this has been discussed with those involved and that we have made sure that the whole of our team is up to date with our current standards.

Nevertheless of the above, the event still took place. Therefore we would like to ask you to give us a second chance and invite you to our Brasserie, for a complimentary 3-course dinner.

Please contact me directly, in order for me to ensure your comfort and wellbeing upon your next stay.

A very central hotel with everything within walking distance.
Breakfast was very good and plentyfull. We must thank the hotel staff for getting me tickets for the football. We were quoted 60 euro each from the travel agency & the hotel got me them for 26 each.
The rooms are very nice with all we needed however we did not spend much time in the room as with most tourists we were out all day & most of the night.
We were also given advice on the best clubs, bars & restaurants. The best was the dinner club which is not to be missed. Had a great night out.
All the staff were very helpful & friendly. Thanks for making us very welcome & next time in Amsterdam we will definitly stay here again. I will certainly be recommending this hotel to anybody who is going to Amsterdam.
