“Quiet and safe but near the action”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2005

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in early November, 2005. Even though we are over 60 we walked from Central Station to the hotel in less than a half hour with backpacks and rolling, carry-on sized suitcases. I decided on this hotel based on location and TripAdvisor reviews. We paid a total of $365.58 for two nights in room 31 on the third floor including a good continental style breakfast, all taxes, and Hotel service fee. The room had two twin beds pushed together, a small table, desk, TV, and small refridgerator. The toilet was in a separate space (I barely fit in) from the shower and sink (no tub). Basic toiletries were provided. Good towels. Wash cloths are not common in Europe and were not provided. The beds were somewhat lumpy but we were always very tired from walking and we slept well with the windows open. The Nova was our first taste of European style bedding - no top sheet, just a comforter with a case on it. The elevator is very tiny and my wife and I (I'm 6'2", 250lbs.) could just fit in with our small amount of luggage. We walked everywhere from the hotel - the dam, red light district, Chinatown, and even into the residential districts. We felt very safe at all times. The tram was riden twice, which stops about a half block from the hotel. Be sure and take a canal tour by boat! Our last morning we had to catch an early train at Central Station and were planning on taking the tram but was told it did not run at the early time we needed to leave so the desk clerk called a taxi and negotiated a price of seven euros for the short trip. We felt the Nova to be very adequate for our needs and would stay there again but bring our own wash cloths!

This hotel is in a good location, and the breakfast is ok - A bit more choice would be welcomed. The room was big and had a fridge in it, which was handy. They could really do with getting someone to go round the building screwing down all the squeeky floorboards. Being woken up at 4 in the morning by people moving about for half an hour is not great. Also, this was another hotel where the shower goes from cold up to hot, but manages to miss a sensible temperature in the middle (unless standing and fidling with it for ten minutes)

Nova hotel in good location near dam square.
All the sights easily accessible. The room was clean with adaquate furnishings including fridge, the breakfast was OK but nothing special. The friendly reception staff were extremely helpful. The many flights of stairs to bedroom may cause a problem to the less agile as it was difficult to carry luggage in and out of the hotel.

For the price we were really pleased with the Hotel Nova. Its location was brilliant next to Dam Square and there was a large supermarket afew doors down. The reception was helpful and the breakfast basic but good. Lots of choice with chocolate sprinkes for the kids.
Our room was huge, no view but why bother to look out the window when you are so close to everything. We also had a full sized fridge which was unusual but welcome.

Our only problem was on the last day. My daughter left her bag in the room as we vacated it we her and her brothers game boys in it. When we reliesed we went back but it had disappeared. Reception were helpful and even rang the police for us. We just had enough time to report the theft before flying home. Don't let this put you off the hotel however as it could have happened anywhere just be careful with your stuff (unlike us)

Stayed at the Nova Hotel in Amsterdam last winter (2003-2004) and had a terrific time. The hotel is located in a very central location, close to all the shops, museums, restaurants, and major attractions. The staff was very friendly and had all the answers and great suggestions. The room was very clean, quite big, and very comfortable. Excellent breakfast in the morning really fills you up for the day. Found a terrific last minute deal on this hotel and had a really great time. Would definitely stay again.

Although thie hotel carries a 3 star rating, the overall quality of the Nova is more in keeping with a 2 start facility. Our room was basic but adequate, the free breakfast offers a broad selection of items, and the staff was very helpful and responsive. The location is indeed excellent and is only steps from the Dam, a large supermarket, and lots of eating options. The tram runs right by the hotel with stops nearby in both directions. If you want a view then ask for a front window (with street noise). We stayed inside but still found the building to be a bit noisy with hearing doors closing, people walking etc. Our room had three twin beds and some have four so this is a good spot for those who can use such bed configurations. The hotel is undergoing renovation one floor at a time but that was not a problem. If this still sounds appealing then look for 2 star pricing on the room- not 3 star. We stayed 5 nights in December and finally nailed down via Internet a double rate of 75 Euros (half of the brochure price). Last-minute walk-ins did even better, if that is an option in your travels.
