“Hot hot hot”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

Stayed here with friends on a long weekend break. The location of the hotel was excellent - we took the train from the airport and the hotel is within a 5 min walk from there. It is also great for accessing the tourist bus and many canal trips as well as walking Tia number of bars and restaurants. We arrived early in the morning and were able to do an express check in and leave our luggage securely until we could access our room later on in the day. The staff were very polite and answered any queries and questions we had. The only disappointment came when we were able to access our room. We had booked a triple room and the website advised 3 comfortable beds - however it failed to say that one of these was not an actual bed but a converted desk with a mattress!!! The room was very small and cramped for 3 people and was very hot - the air con was not very efficient and when we left our room we left it on in an attempt to return to a cooler temperature - however housekeeping had been in and turned it off!! The bathroom was a good size and well equipped - just a shame about the rest of the room. There was also very limited hanging space and hangers for 3 people ( luckily one member of the party was able to live out of her case). We did not. Eating the hotel so I cannot comment on this.

Perfect location for exploring Amsterdam - local and international (and high speed) trains, taxis, trams, ferries, buses, airport shuttles, and tours, all depart outside of this hotel. The tourist bureau is right across the street, and the canal boats are right in front of the hotel. Having just wandered all over Amsterdam, we could not have found a more convenient hotel location for exploring both the city and surrounding countries (all we had to do was walk downstairs to the train station when we felt like a day trip to Belgium, etc.). No worries about ever getting lost since all transportation ends at the Central Station!

The rooms are completely soundproof so no outside noise filters in. The room size is adequate, especially for a European room, The bathroom is also adequate and a hair dryer and lotion is supplied. The entire hotel is immaculate and surrounding area is safe. The main tourist sites are either minutes away on foot or by tram.

Only downside - no coffee maker in room (always a plus in Europe since their coffee/tea is so expensive). Coffee and snacks are available for purchase in the lobby. Hotel breakfast is pricey (17 Euro) - grab breakfast in the train station at the mini supermarket instead for about three Euro (try the sausage patties).

Local tours and tickets can be booked in the hotel lobby with the very helpful concierge. Staff was marvelous - allowing us a checkout as late as 5 p.m. on our last day, giving us plenty of time to finish our exploring!

Great location and comfortable, clean rooms. Free wi-fi excellent (as it is in most bars and restaurants in Amsterdam). However I was very disappointed that when attempting to pay the local tax at check-in with my credit card in euros (not GBP - the currency the receptionist recommended) my card was (strangely) declined. In the hotel restaurant the waiter did not even offer me a choice - fortunately I noticed, cancelled the transaction and paid in cash. PAYING IN GBP (£'s) IS JUST AN UNDERHAND WAY FOR THE HOTEL TO MAKE MORE MONEY OUT OF YOU - it will cost you more than if you pay in the local currency. Check with Martin Lewis if you don't believe me. Incidentally, my card worked fine everywhere else in that lovely city (and every transaction was in euros).

Dear Dini_McG,

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvisor.

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed our location, cleanliness and WiFi.

I'm sorry to learn you encountered some problems regarding your credit card payment and that you describe this as a scam. Please allow me to explain the credit card payments in different currencies: When making a payment, the credit card terminal checks if your card has a so called DCC functionality (Not all credit cards have this functionality). If it does, the payment terminal will offer you the choice of paying either in your own, or the local currency. The exchange rate used for the payment is clearly visible on the payment terminal and is the most actual interbank exchange rate, as provided and published by Reuters. You can choose yourself in which currency you would like to pay. This process is completely transparent.

Paying in your own currency offers several advantages. You can directly see the amount that will be deducted from your account and we offer a best exchange rate guarantee. When you pay in local currency (€), it will take several days before the amount is taken from your account. The exchange rate is then determined by your credit card company and might be an unpleasant surprise. Of course, the credit card company will include a conversion fee in this exchange rate which, in the end, is paid by you. Martin Lewis also mentions this 3% load in his articles.

Alltogether, we offer a transparent choice with visible exchange rates. No scam, no tricks, Should you require any more information regarding these payments, or if you wish to share your experience with me directly, you can always contact me at h1556-dm@accor.com.

Thank you again for your feedback, which is most valuable to us.

Hopefully we can welcome you again in the future.

Best regards,
Dennis Rullens

Stayed here with friends whilst touring round europe.
The hotel is a little walk out of the centre of Amsterdam but not too far.
Typical ibis rooms although I would have to say it wasn't as clean as most other ibis I have stayed at. The staff whilst being efficient were not the friendliest I have ever met at an ibis either.
I'm not sure if I would book again unless I was struggling for a place to stay in Amsterdam.

We have had a wonderful trip to amsterdam on kings day. the personal was very friendly and helpful and spoke english and german. the room was clean but a bit degenerated on some point, like the chair and a big part of the bathroom. But still usable ;)
We have been there with an electronic wheelchair and had no problems.
Best was that our room (the two disable rooms are both) on 7th floor with a huge window. We had a gigantic few over the whole city center.
I also loved that the hotel is next to the main station, but quiet when the windows are closed.

Dear pinkinhell,

Thank you for reviewing our hotel on Tripadvsior.

I'm happy to hear you had a wonderful trip and a good experience in our hotel.
You picked quite the day to visit Amsterdam :-). Hopefully you enjoyed the King's Day festivities!

Your comment regarding the bathroom quite surprised me. Normally our rooms and bathrooms are considered to be very clean, well maintained and 'up to date'. I will have our maintenance department look into this and take appropriate action where needed.

We're looking forward to welcoming you again in the future!
