We decided to stay at the Ibis Stopera instead of one of the B&B's in Amsterdam because we didn't feel like lugging our suitcases up untold flights of narrow stairs. The hotel backed up to one of the canals and our room had a peaceful canal view.
PLUSES: nice size rooms, very clean, nice selection of food in the breakfast buffet, great value for the price which included breakfast and city tax (found it on one of the UK travel websites), LOVED the little bathroom (looked like a spaceship capsule), nice view of one of the small canals from our room, 1 hour free wireless internet/day (but they'll give you extra time if you ask the front desk), friendly and helpful staff, quiet location but within walking distance to the main tourist sites and one of the hop on/hop off canal boat stops.
NEUTRAL: not in the thick of the tourist area (if that's what you're looking for), not a lot of character/feels like a business hotel (i.e., don't come here if you are expecting B&B charm).
Would definitely stay here again.More
