Recently stayed at the Flying Pig Uptown. I went in with minimal expectations and it ended up exceeding them. Was on the 4th floor (would suggest being on the 3rd floor or up to avoid noise). It was super quiet on our floor and bathrooms/showers were kept clean. Well organized rooms and good breakfast included.

Overall good stay - would return.

This is not a quiet, romantic get away kind of hostel. This is the hostel you go to if you want to drink, get high and then head out to the debauched night life Amsterdam has to offer. And thankfully, all three of us were in that frame of mind, and it was perfect. The rooms were clean, toilet facilities were well kept albeit very, very small and the bar was so cheap I cannot even begin to go into detail on it. We were there for 3 nights and each night was great fun. Fantastic bar staff, smoking room was really very communal so lots of rotation. Generally it was the perfect Amsterdam experience. But if you're not in Amsterdam for those things i.e. if you're there to soak in the culture or art, I would recommend elsewhere. I feel this is why the overall rating is lower than I expected.

I found this hostel to e quite gross. The rooms were really cramped and when it rained water dripped through the roof. The staff were friendly enough but not particularly efficient. One good thing was the breakfast that was included. Oh and there's a smokin room so you don't have to go far to get baked.

a very good hostel for the price! i shared a queen size bed with my best friend (which was a bunk bed) it was reasonably big and comfertable. lockers were provided in the room as long as you had a combination lock. we were placed in a room with many guys but they were all nice and all was good. there was a bar & a smoking room in the basement of the hostel, which was conveniant and offered good prices. breakfast was good, simple and tasty (toast, cereal, coffee, juice, etc.) well worth it! 10minutes walking distance to the beginning of the tourist zone, its good that this hostel isnt right inside the red light district, but it was very close. a short walk to many coffeeshops. there was also a grocery store about 10 minutes from our hostel. amsterdam is a gorgeous city with beautiful scenery and canals and i'm glad we decided to stay at the flying pig palace. The staff treated us well, although the breakfast dudes were always stoned!! :P no worries though! we could rent mini-laptops to skype back home, which was really convenient!! one inconvenient point: the kitchen was closed for odd hours during the day. so you needed to go eat at a restaurant or pick up something to eat. p.s go to WOK-TO-WALK: delicious asian food!!

I think dooley888's review below sums this place up - it has a pretty big party vibe going on. If you are going to have a problem with a bunch of backpackers pulling bongs in the smoking room (at 8am), probably best to give this place a swerve. If you are on the first floor above the bar, expect noise too - both from the bar and other backpackers bounding down the stairs. If you are on the 4th floor (I had 2 separate bookings due to the hostel being full on certain dates), you'd better be somewhat fit. Amsterdam staircases are ridiculously steep and you will have 60 or so steps to go up. Might be important to someone I guess.

Having said that, pretty much all the people in the hostel were nice (maybe a little *too* cool at times ;-). The bar is cheap and cheery with a loooong happy hour period. Getting into town with all its historical sites and red light shenanigans is simple even if you are walking. The big museums (Van Gogh, Rijkmuseum) are a short walk the other way.

The rooms were basic but well enough provided for in terms of powerpoints and bedding and reasonably clean. The showers and toilets are a bit cramped, but you are staying in a hostel remember? Consider it part of the experience.

A point to note - If you are arriving at the Amsterdam Zuid (South) train station instead of Amsterdam Centraal, it is a very doable walk to this hostel. Amsterdam is really not that big of a city centre. :-)

The rooms were cramped and always looked unkempt, lockers were broken, and the bathrooms were the worst I've ever been too. Imagine the most filthy public bathroom you've ever seen - this one probably beats it. The only good thing about the room was the blanket, good enough to ward off the cold, cold night.

The free breakfast was good enough for a hostel. I liked their cereals and they had enough spreads. There's also free Wi-Fi in the lobby. It's like a 24/7 party there though, so if you have little tolerance for that, this is one hostel to avoid. Not to mention, the lobby reception left a lot to be desired. The staff was very nice, but you're always competing for their attention. It can take hours to check-in/check-out.

It's found in a residential area, so it's pretty quiet. Still, the location isn't too bad, you can probably walk anywhere from here.

Spent one night at the Flying Pig Uptown in June, not sure that I would go back. After spending the day traipsing around the Netherlands, climbing to the very top of many steep flights of stairs with my bag was not what I was expecting (although I understand that this is the style of the buildings). Would have been alright expect there were two toilets on my floor, one of which was either always occupied or locked due to being out of order and the other had a broken light (and no window) so either you could use it in pitch blackness and not be able to see anything or have to go down to another floor.
I was expecting there to be storage lockers for luggage and valuables and while they were there, there were not enough, so once one person had claimed one with their lock you had to either put your things at their mercy or just try and keep an eye on them.
Noise from the downstairs bar and streets was non-existent on my night but did not sleep due to a chorus of snoring despite ear plugs.
Breakfast was standard fare and was okay.
Probably wouldn't go back to this hostel next time I am in Amsterdam but I think if you are looking for a good base to party this would be it.
