Hans Brinker Hostel Amsterdam
Reviewed 9 August 2012

People need to stop moaning about this place. We paid 20 euros a night for this. It's in Amsterdam, which is expensive in itself, where the next cheapest would be about 30 euros per night. Plus they don't ramp up the prices over the weekend. As a budget hostel, what do you expect? The receptionists were ok, but the entry system is crazy as they have to let you out and back in again, so make sure you keep on their good side. Good location close to a few decent clubs, and only about a 20min walk from the railway station. Rooms were basic, beds were average, toilets and showers were rubbish. Evening meals for 6 euros were fine, large portions and actually quite tasty - surely better than eating out at an overpriced tourist restaurant that'll rip you off, of which there are many in Amsterdam. Wifi only seemed to work in the common room, but once you're down there you really shouldn't be on your iPhone as there's loads of great people there to smash on with. It's a budget hostel, if you can deal with a few unimportant problems then stay here. Otherwise, book a 50 euros a night hotel in the city centre.

May 2011 - Stayed here on a college trip in 2011 & it was definitely enough to put me off Amsterdam all together; on first arrival we had to carry all of our luggage downstairs, past the toilets which had beer cans and sick in from the previous night - great start; to which we then had to put our luggage in their nightclub/stripclub, as it had a pole in the middle of the room, where did they bring us?! When we could finally go to our room it had written on the doorframe 'Welcome to Hell' brilliant... the room was very spacious which was good as there were 6 of us in one room, the bathroom was awful, bedsheets were dirty and black hairs everywhere. When we went to get our 'breakfast' there was maids cleaning the mess/sick from the previous night on the tables they expected us to eat on, no chance; from then on we decided we would probably be better off without breakfast.
All in all - disgusting place to stay; however if you really don't care about the standards of cleanliness etc, then you probably wouldn't mind it here!

This "hotel" is very basic. You pretty much pay for a bed and that's it, which is all you need when staying in Amsterdam! It's in a good location, easy walk to the main parts of the tourism area. The rooms were basic but clean.

The breakfast is terrible, I would recommend that they didn't even bother putting it on unless they provide a toaster and FREE cereal.

Probably wouldn't stay again but it would be ideal for people on a tight budget.

I really didn't know what to expect when i turned up to the hans brinker. I saw on lots of reviews that the reception staff were rude but when we got there at about 11 oclock we were greeted with a smile told that the rooms wouldn't be ready until 2 oclock but said we could put all our stuff in the luggage room. when we came back we got our keys and payed a deposit of 5 euros for them. My friends and i were in a 3 bedroom private bathroom on the 2nd floor so we got the lift, wonderfully decorated by graffiti i must say! We dreaded the moment going into the room but when we opened it there was a fresh smell in the air, 3 spotless beds with linin and towel folded neatly on the side. and a fully functioning toilet and shower! everything was fine! However, i woke up quite early the first morning to find my inhaler from my bag and descovered water had come through the pipes for the radiator and also had dripped through the window and so a lot of my clothes were soaking wet through. The 3rd night we were there though was the worse. it had been raining heavilly and non stop through the whole night and we woke up to find that the whole room was covered in water about 3cm deep. Nightmare. however we didn't know if this was due to the window being slightly opened or that it had come through the pipes as there were damp patches all the way down one wall. despite this, my friends and i had a wonderful stay. Beds were comfy, shower was hot and powerful, everything was clean.
Note that the towels they give you are only hand towels so you should consider bringing or buying your own larger one. if you have a room that faces the courtyard you can sometimes hear smokers chatting or at night you can hear the bass of the disco in the basement.
Make sure you are there between 5-6 for happy hour every day. Drinks at the bar are already cheap but they become 2 for 1 in happy hour. so i got 2 glasses of wine for 2 euro! not bad or 2 pints of Heineken for 4 euro! got a bit merry between these hours. the food in the hotel is very basic but nice and you get massive portions...well worth the money. I had a veg pasta which was lovely (a bit on the cold side) but there is also things like fish and chips burger ect on the menu. I also got up one day for the breakfast which literally was a piece of bread and various sachets of sauces. i decided to just par 4.50 for an English breakfast which was nice and filling.

One thing i was surprised at with this hotel is that the people keep themselves to themselves and we didnt really meet any other people even though the majority spoke English. I thought it would be a much more of a communal atmosphere.

Oh and the only time i went down to the 'club' was at about 1 on a thursday night and it was completely dead!!!! just a few shady men on some seats. i didnt go down again but i bet it would have been ok if more people were there!

My advise is to chose the hans brinker it was great value for money and they dont tell lies. its basic but its somewhere clean and safe to stay!!!!!!

The worst place you could ever stay at, and they are actually proud of it! there's a book that is in a glass cabinet in their dining hall that states that this place is the worst in the world. and it is. it's awful. don't stay here.
awful beddings, awful rooms, there's no barrier on the beds, so if youre on the top bunk you can easily fall out, the shower is just a trickle and cold water, food is awful, there's nothing for breakfast so it might as well not even be included.... you have to PAY for fruit.

I stayed with 2 friends in a room with a private bathroom, from reading previous reviews I expected it to be worse than it was, our room was clean, our bathroom was clean, the beds were comfortable and for the price we paid we couldn't really have expected much more. The shower is a bit like a hosepipe coming from the wall but you can still get a quick wash, the toilet is backwards, which is abit odd, and you are provided with a locker each in the room. They advise you not to leave valuables in these lockers and to rent one from the reception but we left stuff in there with no trouble. Its in a good location, right by a tram line, you can even walk to most places from here, close to lots of clubs/restaurants/coffee shops.
