Budget hotel Hortus provides reasonably priced basic accommodation and breakfast in central area of Amsterdam. Situated in approximately 20 minutes walking distance from central railway station. For me the price and location were the main factors for choosing hotel. I almost didn`t use any transport during my weekend stay in Amsterdam. All the main attractions in city center could be easily reached on foot. I had a room on the upper floor. The room was small and simply furnished. There was a sink inside but toilet and shower, both of very small space were outside. Towels were provided but soap not, so I should warn travelers to come here with their own shampoo and soap. I have to mention also very steep stairs that lead to upper floors. It might be not suitable for heavy luggage. As a whole I was quite satisfied with this hotel.

Such a great atmosphere!! The staff was just incredible. From the moment we walked in whether it was to help us plan our day or trying to find a place to eat, they didn’t mind stopping whatever they were doing to help us out. The hotel location is ideal. At the corner is a beautiful park that overlooks one of the many rivers you will find in Amsterdam. The location was easy to find as well. It is too long to walk from the main train/tram station. If you follow the instructions the hotel provides on there website on how to get to the hotel you will be fine. The tram leaves you a few steps away from the entrance. My room was a private on the first floor with a shared bathroom. The room and bathroom were so clean. There is a full kitchen as well which you can use. The breakfast consist of bread, coffee, tea, cheese, ham, cereal and all that simple stuff. If you want to have too many beers and have a good time, Amsterdam is the place to go. If you want to lay in the park and read a book, Amsterdam is the place to go. If you want to have a relaxing dinner with your loved one, Amsterdam is the place to go. As you can see, there is something for everyone. If I ever return to Amsterdam, which I will, I would recommend this hotel for everyone and stay there myself.

Hotel Hortus,is in a scenic area opposite a large park and close to many attractions. They do a very good breakfast, and are geared up for the adventurous or the young at heart. The first thing they told us was we could smoke in the building, but if it was just tobacco we would have to go outside in their patio area, lol welcome to Amsterdam ! Loved the city and this hotel is in a great area. The red light district is 20/30 mins walk "just turn right when leaving hotel, sharp left then pretty much straight on.For a much better evening"where the locals hang out" do the opposite. Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein areas are basically a twenty min walk the other way i.e head in a behind the hotel direction. The hotel is run by Americans who will happily give you all the info where ever you want to visit. We had a room on the ground floor, anything higher would have been a challenge, believe,we considered having a look upstairs but hadn`t packed any ropes ! I recommend this hotel for a laid back base, they have sky sports, free tea and coffee all day plus a machine with soft and alcoholic drinks at a fair price.Local trams are everywhere and regular.

Room Tip: Low room or you`ll get a nose bleed.

Best hotel of our trip! Well, first, as soon as we checked-in the front desk personal let us know the rules – You can smoke what you want – just keep the window open! – It was no problem since a window spanned the entire width of the room. The room was longer than wider though by 3 times. The room was clean, modern, and spacious with tall ceilings and in the freshly updated wing of the hotel. No fridge, but we could use the one downstairs! The bed was very comfy. There was a ½ bath with sink and private shower. The only negative was the toilette shared. It was really small. Breakfast was included and was descent – eggs, ham, cheese, PB&J, bread (which could be toasted), cereal, milk, tea/coffee 24/7. Location was great! Peaceful place right next to the botanical gardens. We even had parrots singing from the trees outside our window. Hotel is right off the Tram #9 which leads right passed the botanical gardens, Waterlooplein with access to Metro, the always lively Rembrantplein, Dam square to finally centraal station - Tram stop A. Leave 15-20mins to get there. Great friendly staff. English/American. Hostel feeling w/ lots of young people from all over the world! Will definitely stay here again!
