“Hotel Brian - Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2006

We booked Hotel Brian expecting the worst. As four 17year old girls we couldn't really afford anything particularly snazzy, so we settled for Hotel Brian. Of course, it's basic, but it's clean. We were most dreading the shared bathroom facilities but they were spotless, as was the kitchen and our room (until we got there).

The hotel is cute and full of character, the staff are FANTASTIC (and absolutely hilarious) and there's a really nice, layed back feel to the place. Free tea and coffee all day comes in far more useful than you'd think aswell!

Breakfast it simple but nice enough (though we only made it out for breakfast once).

We felt really safe in Hotel Brian, we'd heard horror stories of how scary and dangerous Amsterdam is, but everyone was super helpful and made our stay comfortable.

  • Liked — The staff. So friendly and helpful!
  • Disliked — Stairs were incredibly steep!

Hotel Brian made our expirience in Amsterdam amazing. We ended up staying a week longer than we had scheduled, and they were very flexible, finding space for us at one of the three hostels they own, even when they were booked full. This was the only hostel I have ever visited that offered free internet and free breakfast. It's clean, right down the street from Amsterdam Centraal, and within 5 min walk from the city's best smart shops and coffeeshops. Amnesia, Grey Area, Any Day, two Bulldogs, InnerSpace, and many others are literally right around the corner. The staff kicks[-----] . The first day we arrived, we had been travelling through the UK, had gone 48 hours with no sleep and were exhausted. As soon as we entered, this guy Brent says "You have a reservation? Great. Here try my new vaporizer" and that's when we knew we were home.

We have just come back from our european holiday. Our stay at Hotel Brian was our most memorable in the whole 3 weeks. The staff were FANTASTIC!! We were greeted with such warmth and instantly made to feel at home. We were given maps and the staff circled all the places that we should see without us even asking. The rooms are very basic, but very clean. We spent a week at the hotel and were made to feel like part of the family. Each morning, you were cooked eggs and toast by a very enthusiastic guy called Allen (who can talk the leg off a wooden chair- DON"T GET HIM STARTED ON ANY DEEP CONVERSATIONS!! ha ha) One of the reception guys called Brent made our stay there great. He is the most friendly guy in the world and would do anything for anyone. He took us under his wing and showed us the sights of Amsterdam and told us all the do's and dont's. It is a great place to meet other travellers as there is a common room which everyone is welcome to use. We spent a lot of time there and made some good friends. The hotel has free internet that you can use any time, free tea and coffee and free use of the kitchen. The common room also has fox tv, but don't watch when Allen is on shift cause he watches the discovery channel and will start talking about the evolution and of man and wont stop even if you walk away. (nice guy though) There is no curfew and it is very secure. It is located right in the heart of Amsterdam - 5 minute walk to the red light district and main shopping mall. We highly reccommend this hotel to any budget traveller. Big thumbs up from us. Nikki and Kyle - Perth Western Australia

If you're on a tight budget Hotel Brian is definitly the place. For 25euro a night it is a bargain, since you get a central location in Amsterdam, a great view on the Singel canal, clean sheets and a clean shared bathroom, free breakfast, free coffee and tea all day, free internet. You can also use the kitchen to make your own food.

However, on the downside, someone stole our money while we were at breakfast, some 200euro, and as I can see here, it has happened before in this hostel. I would go back to hotel brian only if there was no other way to afford a better place, and I would take my money with me even to the bathroom.

I stayed at several hotels in Amsterdam before staying at the Hotel Brian and the hotel brian was my favorite. While the rooms weren't exactly the nicest looking, the sheets and bathrooms were clean, you got breakfast in the morning, and the people who stayed and worked there were fabulous, there was also a computer that you could use for free in the lobby. The price was also the best that we found while in Amsterdam. I definetly plan on staying there again.
